Clarence Budington Kelland. Marper Brothers, $2.00. Novels by Clarence Budington Kelland are always eagerly anticipated by the host of his enthusiastic admirers for never yet has he failed to give them clean, refreshing, entertaining reading. And in this, his latest ottering. "Miracle" he has given his best It grips you from cover to cover, and when you lay down the book it is worth the feeling that you have read something big and worth-while.

The story moves with rapid action against a back ground of historic picturesque Quebec and adjoining villages, peopled with simple wholesome French Canadian folk living the peaceful, contented, religious life which is so foreign to the restlessness and discontent prevalent in the modern big city. The same day that saw Donovan Steele come to La Malbaie, saw the coming of Neree Caron to the parish of Ste Agnes; both had been betrayed by those they trusted, he by tbe woman he loved; she by her Uncle who had plotted against her. Donovan it left embittered and cyncical, with a distrust and hatred of his fcllowmen, and unbelief in the Diety; but with Neree Caron suffering only refined and exalted her the more, and her faith in God grew sweeter and stronger. Strangely, the paths of these composite characters met and then began for Donovan the conflict between bis better nature and the evil in him. His worst self predominated for sometime, until be won for himself through his ruthlessness, daring and fighting, the name of "The Bad and became a wanderer, feared by all, a man who knew no peace, no rest, no God, no friends.

Against his will, however, Donovan found himself becoming entangled in the affairs of Neree who was a fugitive from justice, being unjustly accused of poisoning her little brother, and in spite of himself fell under the spell of the purity of soul, charity of heart, and steadfast faith of the lovely Neree. But the love which dawned in his heart for her he stilled fearful lest his trust again should bring him suffering. The savage combat between Cluny, boss of St. Fidele woods, and Donovan, is depicted in true Kellog style, representing a picture of two powerful forces fighting for supremacy. It is in the tragic outcome of the fight to Donovan who, although victorious, found a still harder battle ahead of him, that the dramatic climax of the novel reaches it's heights.

To the shrine of St. Anne de Beaupre in old Quebec, with it's miraculous power of healing those both sick in body and in mind, Donovan Steele the unbeliever, was taken by the three who loved him best. The author has glowingly worked up to the "miracle" which occured to give physical as well as spiritual sight to one who had been in darkness. Neree's name was finally cleared and Donovan's awakening to the realization that friendship, honor, trust, love and religion and the living things in a beautiful world, found it's reward in his acknowledged love for Neree. You will miss something fine if you don't read it is the sort of book you will strongly recommend to your l'riends because of it's beauty, hopefulness and faith.

Motherhood drew upon her head the jeers and sneers of her little world she held her secret in her heart and never lost faith in her love for Ivan Martin-dale. There after a hard struggle she found employment in a cabaret, which later led to a position In an ultra fashionable church in Fifth Avenue, where finally one of the parishioners gave her a chance to study vqice In Paris. Her career was interrupted by the world war. She enlisted in a field hospital as a nurse. While on duty one day she was called to hear tbe death-bed confession of a man whom she had known in her childhood, the cocksure sporty amateur Don Juan who had pestered her with his love making. His confession revealed that he had killed her lover after he had left the secret garden that night of their tryst many years ago.

Solution of Last Week's Puzzle (Copyright 1023 by Tbe BU Syndicate, lac.) Governor-General Saito Urges Nation Plant 1 ,000,000 Acres By LUTHER HUSTON, International News Service Staff Correspondent. Tokyo, March 21. Extensive schem es for the development of agriculture and the encouragement of industry in Korea are under consideration by the Japanese Government, according to' Baron Minoru Saito, Governor-General of Korea, who is now In Tokyo pressing the claims of his territory before the Imperial Diet. The chief feature of the plan which Baron Saito is sponsoring involves government subsidies sufficient to make possible the development of ap proximately l.uou.uuu acres or land for rice culture. It is estimated that nearly 40,000,000 bushels of rice could be produced annually on this land.

The Japanese Government already is assisting agriculture in Korea to the extent of about $350,000 annually but, according to Baron Saito, this is far from enough. If the plan he proposes is adopted. Baron Saito declar es, Japan can get enough rice from Korea to be virtually independent of other countries. As things now are Japan Is compelled to import millions of bushels of rice annually to meet the demands of her home market Under the plan now being consider ed, a comprehensive development program would be outlined and followed over a period of about ten years. Baron Saito estimates that within that time it would be possible to put under cultivation virtually all the land in Korea that is suitable for rice growing and insure maximum production for the country.

But for the earthquake of September, 1923, and the subsequent economic depression in Japan, the Korean development work already would have been undertakeu by the Government, Baron Saito believes.
