TUESDAY, JUNE 21 Jt JL I I '1 I UPI Fords Humiliate Mighty Ferraris In Le Mans Race LE MANS, France (AP) Ford Is the first American auto maker ever to win at Le modi less take the top three places in the 24-hour marathon race. And in the process the American cars pounded archrival Ferrari down to humiliating eighth and tenth places. Henry Ford II glowed with pleasure yesterday as he handed victory bouquets to Ford Drivers Bruce MacLaren and Chris Amon, who were declared winners in a computer-figured finish. It was these two New Zealanders and their teammates in 12 other starting Fords who ground the 14 Ferraris out of contention within 10 hours, leaving only two low finishers, a far cry from the six straight victories Ferrari had captured almost automaticaly since I960. Fords accomplished in 1966 whit Chrysler, Stutz, Deusen- burg and the Cadillac-based Briggs Cunningham specials beat the Europeans in their own toughest test of high speed machinery The cost was enormous.

Published figures have said $400,000 for the Le Mans trip alone and $9 million for the entire three- year-old racing effort. These are figures which Ford officials neither confirm nor deny. The eight fastest Fords, all with seven-liter V8 engines, quickly dominated the top places. Dan Gurney of Costa Mesa, began setting lap records nearly every other time around the 8.3 miles laid out mostly on public roads winding through hills and woods.

But after four hours of playing the jackrabbit, the Fords began coming into the pits, and the fastest Ferraris, new four- liter P-3 models, took over first and second places. troubles ran the gamut from a rear hood that blew off into the grass to an engine that flew to pieces. A few of the American cars began petering out. Then the Ferrari camp ran into difficulties. One of the P-3s went out with a frozen transmission.

Ludovicov Scarfiotti of Italy smashed the snout of another P-3 against a couple of slow French cars. Finally, the third went out with mechanical ailments. After clinching victory, the Ford team had to decide just which drivers should be allowed to win. Ken Miles of Hollywood. was picked because it would have given him consecutive victories in endurance races in Fords this year.

But in a Le Mans start the car at the head of the line will have traveled a few feet less for the same number of laps than the car in the next position. Miles was therefore 20 yards short of McLaren Amon. McLaren had gained the 20- yards by placing high in the time trials. McLaren felt sorry about it and Miles smashed a champagne glass in anguish. But the Ford team had won.

WASHINGTON (AP) Speedboat racer Rex Manchester, who had become tired of running second, said last week he was going to be a winner this season and expected his good fortune to begin with the Cup Regatta for unlimited hydroplanes. His prediction came true yesterday but the 39-year-old former combat marine from Seattle, who had never won a race in the big boat competition, did not live to see it. Manchester, runner-up for national honors in 1965 and second last week in Sun Coast race, was killed during the regatta, along with time national champion Ron Musson, 38. also of Seattle, and Don Wilson, 37, Palmer Beach a substitute driver. The racers were killed in two separate accidents at speeds estimated at more than 150 miles per hour while driving their speedboats over the Vk- mile course on the Potomac River.

6, Miss Lapeer, Warner Gardner of Detroit, 450. The men were driving boats that averaged 30 feet in length, weighed 6,000 pounds, and all were powered by aircraft engines from World War II except Miss Chrysler Crew, which had an auto engine. They were built to soar over the surface of the water, much like skipping stones. Musson, last national champion, was driving a new boat. He sat in front of the engine, 10 feet from the bow of the boat, instead of behind the power plant.

He was competing in the second elimination and was in hot pursuit of the boat driven by Wilson, subbing for regular Miss Budweiser driver Bob Brow, who was injured in Tampa. As Musson completed the first lap, the craft took off from the water, bounced, then soared skywards once again. It came down on its nose and exploded. At the time of the accident, near-perfect water conditions prevailed. Musson had raced the new Miss Bardahl for the first time Saturday in an elimination race.
