iJSECTlONC TUtSA WORLD RIDAY OCTOBER 13 1989 Philharmonic JBy David MacKenzieWorld Staff Writer I Theme concerts are always a Jdalculated risk And juggling lairound the usual format is risky Itbo or the most part however Jthose risks paid off for the TulsaPhilharmonic under the baton of 7 Bernard Rubenstein at the Per lforming Arts Center Thursday uiguv The program was devoted to composers from Eastern Europe Although a concerto was offered there was also a concertino for piano trio and orchestra Rubenstein opened the pro gram with an impassioned read ing of "Dances rom Galanta" which featured a fine performance from principal clar inetist Shannon Scott on the writ ing for that instrument Then a rarity tricky concertino with the Suk Trio composed of Josef Suk the en founder on violin along with the pianist Josef Hala and the cellist Josef Chuchro This five movement work is quirky but very engaging as well The centerpiece of the concert after intermission featured Suk as a soloist on Violin Concerto No 1 a two movement composition surprising to think that this concerto finished in 1908 lan guished for a half century before its first performance in 1958 In the subtle and adroit hands of a man such as Suk it was a wonder to hear The first move ment is marked Andante Sostenu to and there is seemingly writing for the violin in every measure And such writing!
