2 SECTION TULSA WORLD RIDAY MAY 19 1989 The Jetsons Continued from who knows what else? Hanna Barbera Home Video vice president Wendy Moss re Sorts appearances by costumed etson characters in video stores and Jetson giveaways at fast food restaurants all centered on this video releases Mention one of his beloved creations and the ever animated Barbera reels off facts figures and anecdotes Mention the ori gins of and he starts with ancient history the history of the modern stone age family phe nomena that preceded Jet in 1960 as first prime time cartoon series had a feeling that the coun try was ready for a family orient ed animated show on prime Barbera recalls was a tough sell to the networks at first we do anything right Then we thought this was going to be the first animated show on prime time why we go back to the first families the knew we had to have skin clothing bare feet maybe a dino usually involve a humorous strug gle between technology and hu manity with humanity almost al ways winning In the a seg ment on irst Epi Jane decides she needs a maid because her high tech appli ances keep malfunctioning She enlists Rosie a mechanical like servant to tend to the housework The multifaceted Rosie wins over most of the Jet sons with her human like quali ties but George is against keeping her until she bakes a yummy cake for his grouchy boss Mr Spacely which gets George a raise Like is often at its wackiest when sending up popular show biz personalities of its time One of the smartest examples of this sort of ribbing can be found in Date With Jet also included on irst Epi Here Judy wins a song writing contest that sends her on a date with rock and roll heartthrob Jet Screamer Staunchly opposed to his date with the pel vis swaying Elvis like crooner overprotective George spies on Judy and intergalactic night on the town only after George gets to play the drums at a Jet Screamer jam session that the singer wins his trust During the course of this 22 minute animated program we have a dead on parody of a pop icon of the time a family feud some finger snapping bedtnik musicians a psychedelic pre MTV music video to the song Opp Ork Ah and visits to such hip space age hangouts as the Swivel Lounge and Space burger In other words an episode with Jetsons gems But many of the Jetson epi sodes are more heartfelt such as Coming of in which George opposes adopting a lovable sometimes talking dog named Astro Ultimately of course George gives in and as the dog pro nounces his own name becomes' part of the family This sort of family oriented storyline has played a large part in and other Hanna Barbera successes And that changed Barbera hints that the plot for the new feature length film will involve situations contemporary Moms Dads and their children can relate to has a new job and the family has to adjust to says Barbera just say some of the film has to do with environ mental problems I want to spoil the But Barbera has let out of the bag that Judy Jetson will have a new person supplying her voice: just say very popular with the youngsters now and sing a few songs in the Aw come on Joe OK Tiffany will be the voice of Judy Jetson But happy to report that fans of throughout the years will not be disappointed This movie will appeal to these fans as well as their Hmmmmm Wonder if Tiffany will sing that unforgettable bossa nova flavored theme song You know the one everybody keeps humming Karen Keith Named Co Anchor of KJRH Curtis Gary Granite and Ann we went in the other direction to Barbera continues space race was on mind in the early and we thought we could have some fun and spoof the future at the same Today adven tures appear remarkably fresh funny and strangely on target Homespun nostalgic (at least to those who watched them the first time around) and visionary at the same time the inventive stories Keillor the No 1 position on the Radio and Records magazine country chart also No 6 and climbing on Billboard chart and seems headed for the top spot on other national country charts as well The unusual thing about it is that Better is first record as a solo artist On any label Ever So naturally the question to ask Black is how been able to beat odds so astronomical that almost laughable how been able to do something that virtually no other country performer has done have a No 1 hit his first time out think the song has everything to do with the thoughtful 27 year old said in a recent tele phone interview course a lot of it had to do with everybody getting behind it to give it that exposure but I think that country music is essentially song orient ed and I think this song gives people something that said much in country music saying is that no matter how many relationships been in and even though a relationship has to end the person in the relationship is better for having dealt with the other per son something people grabbed onto right away women PREVIEW Show and Dance: True Ranch Barn Dance starring Clint Black with Candis Clark and the Blue Ribbon Band open ing Date and Time: Saturday 10 pm Place: True Ranch 61st Street and Oak Grove Road Broken Arrow Admission: $7 for advance tickets at Cadillac Country and Just Boots $10 at the door Note: The event is being held in con junction with Broken Arrow Rooster Days especially liked it think the video also had something to do with he added could see me up there with my band doing the song and radio people were get ting requests for it even before heard the Black a Houston native picked up the acoustic guitar at an early age learning a number of country and country folk songs But he dropped it for a time in favor of joining a rock band fronted by his older brother was when I was in high he recalled my band would play just stand over to one side and sing harmony The band have a bass player and so finally the guitarist handed me a bass guitar and said So I be came a bass After the band broke up Black returned to the acoustic guitar Working as a single he soon be came a familiar face and voice on the Houston club circuit did coffeehouses and things like that for about seven he said anything that would lend itself to acoustic gui tar sing some of the more obscure style country songs some country folk stuff up there with an acoustic guitar and a harmoni ca brace I was doing it as much as six times a week a couple of times a day It was a pretty gruel ing inally Black said enough was enough knew I had to get out or I was going to wear my throat out because I sing pretty hard was all very simple to me I ever going to go to Nash ville or Los Angeles or New York My intention was to get some thing together here and find a manager And when I met Bill and we worked out our deal for man agement production and publish ing that was it After you get your management in order you can just be an is Bill Ham the presi dent of the Houston based Lone Wolf Management Black was the first country artist signed to the Lone Wolf roster whose other acts include ZZ Top and Paul Rogers Ham suggested Black go into the studio with guitarist Hay den Nicholas with whom Black had begun working After they had turned out some demonstra Clint Black will perform Saturday in Broken Arrow A a 'A WMI Atta tion recordings Ham took the songs to Nashville RCA was the first label he showed them to and RCA was the label that signed Black Now after so many years as a local club act Black is learning about the music business and the pressures and obligations that come with having a hot record So far he seems to be doing just fine with it all they first sent me out on a radio tour to promote the rec ord when I started talking to the press I was he said was the unknown I know how the people perceived me how I perceived them how everything fit together But from the moment I got my feet wet I liked it I was calling my management saying is great do this some Black laughed talked to cares about country music and made me feel like done something good like welcome surprised real ly that things are going this well But my intention was always to get to this point what kept me going through all those hours of playing for two people who hap pened to be at the MS Southwestern Bell Telephone Save your My
