He was 56. Button, who also helped keep the Pittsburgh Penguins from being disbanded in the mid 1970s and lost his general manager's job for his trouble, died Wednesday night at a hospital in Washington. He had worked with the NHL Capitals for the past 17 years, mostly as director of player personnel and recruitment.

Button was one of the most loved and highly respected men in sports," Capitals owner Abe Pollin said. "His loyalty and devotion to our organization was unsurpassed. Jack cared deeply about people and was a wonderful, wonderful person." Button was general manager of the Penguins in 1974-75. Under his direction, the Penguins were 54-44-19, and he was the team's only general manager with a winning record until current GM Craig Patrick. When the Penguins were placed into receivership in 1975, a judge appointed Button to oversee the process.

While the NHL considered disbanding the team, Button talked with 35 potential buyers. Ohio businessman Al Savill wound up paying $3.8 million. Longtime hockey executive Wren Blair, one of Savill's partners, immediately ousted Button installed himself as general manager. Button was hired in 1975 by the 3 24-25 at Omaha Correctional Center. $25 deposit.

BY DAN SILVIA WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER The Omaha Flames picked the right time to finally beat the Sioux City Breeze. After going 0-3 against the Breeze in the regular season, the Flames topped Sioux City 3-1 Friday night at Tranquility Park in the first round of the USISL Premier League playoffs. "For a while you start to think maybe we're snake bit.

Maybe this team really does have our number," said Omaha Coach Bill Koeppen. "All along we thought we were right there with them. Tonight we created some luck and some great scoring opportunities." Johnny Torres and Paul Lekics combined on the Flames' first goal at the 29 minute, 10 second mark. After pushing the ball deep into the Breeze's goal box, Torres managed to keep the ball away from Sioux City goalkeeper Doug Siegle and hit Lekics for an easy header. "I just turned and tried to stay away from the goalie because all I could see were gloves coming at my feet," Torres said.

"I just pivoted and crossed and was lucky enough that Paul was there and able to finish it." Koeppen was impressed that Torres, one of the smaller players on the field, was able to occupy much of Sioux City's defense before getting off the pass. He just stayed with it. There was a little bit of everything there: some great skill, some perseverance, some hard work, and finally a fantastic pass," Koeppen said. Torres added a goal on a penalty kick at the 53:52 mark. before exiting the game along with Mike Bustos with 25 minutes remaining in the game.

Keith DeFini and Brian Adams entered the game to give the Flames some fresh legs at the forward spots. "The hardest part of my job has been putting the starting 11 down on the roster card. You know you're going to leave three or four guys out of the starting 11 that are starter quality," Koeppen said. "It's a luxury to have that quality of player coming off the sideline for you. You bring Torres and Bustos off and then here comes Adams and DeFini.

They want to take deep breath and they can't because they're going to be under pressure some Sioux City's Chris Reid scored the Breeze's lone goal at the 85:16 mark, but Adams, who played for the Breeze last season, countered with a blast off a free kick just three minutes later. "They got us three times at the beginning of the year and I heard from some of the guys that I played with last Adams said.
