Since World ar II the airplane more and more has taken the Midas metal for mysterious wanderings from country to country. It still rides trains and ships, but planes have proved safe and much faster. The risk of loss is frequently less.

Gold is a strange traveler, often changing owners without moving at all. But when it changes location. it does so with a ceremony befitting the glittering monarch of metals, the National Geographic Society says. Whether on plane or train or ship, it is a pampered passenger and always commands a royal retinue of guards. In this country the great point of departure for the monetary metal is New York City's Federal Reserve Bank.

When a shipment is to be flown abroad the gold is first crated deep inside the bank's vaults. The brick-sized. 400-ounce ingots are each wrapped in Manila paper and buried in sav. dust. Guards stand by while carpenters piece together the wooden boxes which prevent chipping and denting of the soft yellow metal.

I In an armored car the gold Is whisked away to planesicle. At the United States Government price of $35 an ounce, a ton is valued at approximately $1,100.000. A four motored, chartered plane can carry a top load of six to seven tons. One special advantage of air transport is that fewer guards are needed than on ship or train. Another is that there is less transshipment.

Planes can more often go the whole way to the gold destination. Multiple loading and unloading means added risks, and that means high insurance costs. Today the world is experiencing a strange kind of rush. The metal is rushing through Uncle Sam's fingers in large quantities. So far this vear the government, with well over $20.000.000,000 on hand, has sold more than SI.140- 000,000 worth abroad and hasn't bought a penny's worth.

Great Britain has been the big purchaser half a billion dollars. Argentina. Belgium. Germany, Mexico and the Netherlands have been other buyers. Financial experts say the transactions reflect improved finances in many countries.

Paradoxically, little gold has ac- ually moved out of this country. Great Britain, for instance, has large stocks in New York. A purchase by Britain thus merely means a shift from a U. S. to a British account.

But some gold does move. In March $4.300,000 left the vaults for Canada, the rest to Belgium, France, Lebanon, and the Philippines In September $7.900,000 went to Netherlands, and in October $800,000 headed for Germany. Another recent trend has been the xale of Russian gold in Europe. This has resulted in a sharp price slump in the free market. Nobody outside the Iron Curtain really knows how much gold Russia owns or what it plans to do with it.

Whitmeyer Succeeding Kueth Appointed Advisor Capt. George L. Whitmeyer. 217 Pargoud Drive Monroe, has been appointed to succeed Major Francis Kueth as Army Advisor for the U. Army Reserve unith at Selman Field, it was announced yesterday.

Major Kueth is leaving for the Far East on March 15. A native of New Jersey, Capt. Whitmeyer entered the army as an enlisted man in 1941. and served the Twnty-seventh Division, in Hawaii, until 1943, when he was commissioned at the Infantry School, Ft. Bennings, Ga.

I In 1944, Whitmeyer was sent to Europe, where he was assigned to the Eightv-third Division. He served with that organization from the landing on the beaches at Xor- jmandv, until the end of the war. While serving in Europe Whitmeyer was awarded the silver star, bronze star, and purple heart. Capt, Whitmeyer married Miss Frances Raby. Monroe, in 1949, and made his home here.

While in Monroe he was a member of a local reserve unit. He was a member of that unit when it was recalled to active duty in 1950. From Monroe Capt. Whitmeyer was sent to Camp Chaffee, and the following year was transferred to Indiantown Gap, Pa. He sent from Indiantown Gap to Korea, where he served from October 1951 to June 1952, when he was reassigned to Tokyo, Japan.

Whitmeyer joined him there a short time later. The Whitmeyers returned to this country in October 1953.
