THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK On tho Honor Roll The Hippy id The happiest man in the world is the common every day chap who makes hiss own living, pays his own bills and has the respect of his neighbors. He saves a little money as he goes along, but try to get a corner on the local output, and he is not a slave to ambition or society. He never exacts to wear out his trousers in the senate, and when he glides out of bed in the morning he never wastes any time trying to pick out tine right tint of socks, suspenders and necktie that will blend with the general effect.

He only wears a high collar when he feels like it, and when his pet corn begins to jump he jerks out his knife and cuts a four inch gash in the side of his shoe, and nothing is said about it in the local paper, He never has to sit up at night to poultice his conscience. He believes in the doctrine of live and let live. When he encounters the needy he stutter with his pock- I et book. W.H.Stedham presented the tire boys with a check for twenty dollars last Friday to show his appreciation of the work they did on tile 9th in an effort to save his home from being destroyed by tire. Whitewright has one of the liest volunteer tire departments in the State, and the citizens should he liberal in showing their appreciation. The boys receive no pay for their workhand risk their lives every time they answer a call.

Chief Gat tis informs us that this is the first check of this nature that the boys have received in about four years. It is a good habit and one that should lie emulated. The boys appreciate Mr. 8 ted liberal gift, and such acts as this is what encourages the human race to do better things. Mr.

Stedham never misses an opjxirtunity to say a few words of praise for tile fire boys and to boost his town. aK Will Come When need the assistance of a little bank account or mayhap the advice and experience of a good bank. Are you identified with an institution of that sort? Is your money lying idle or is it planted with a growing bank and associating you with influential interests? CARLISLE MILITARY ACADEMY OF TEXAS WAI Occupy the Grayson College Open September 23ri Whitewright is especially fortunate in securing the Carlisle Military Academy. This means a successful private school for this place with patronage from an extensive territory, covering Texas, Oklahoma and, to some extent, other near-by states. Dr.

J. M. Carlisle, the superintendent of this school, has made for himself an enviable reputation as a teacher, a manager of boys and as an executive school officer. Prior to 1890 he built up and conducted for seven years, at Whitesboro in this county, one of the best schools then in the State. He was then elected superintendent of the city public school of Corsicana and later was made superintendent of the city schools of Fort Worth, in both of which positions he made imputations for himself and the schools.

Upon the resignation of Supt. H. C. Pritchett to become principal of the Sam Houston Normal School, Governor J. S.

Hogg appointed Dr. Carlisle State intendent of Public Instruction without Dr. Carlisle being a candidate, even without his knowing that he was being considered. Ho was elected by the people of the State to this jxjsition three times, so he served in this capacity for seven years and three months, and his record in this position has never been surpassed for efficiency by any incumbent of the office. For eleven years he has been sujierintendent pf the Carlisle Military' Academy, in institution founded by him.

This Academy has all the time been noted fop its efficiency and its development of boys into strong men. Dr. Carlisle is noted for his ability to manage and to inspire boys. To do these two things requires rare talent. Discipline alone is not sufficient.

To control a boy by force is only temporary. His permanent improvement demands a higher order of discipline than that provided by force. Dr. Carlisle has this higher order of discipline in a high degree. His boys in school are his friends.

When they become men they are still his friends, even stronger, for then they see the full meaning of his wise policies, which they could not, as boys, fully grasp. But Dr. Carlisle, with his wide experience, his extensive acquaintance, his marked success in every position which ho has filled, cannot build up at Whitewright a great school against the will and wish of her citizens. This is a rare opportunity for Whitewright. Will our people grasp it, and help bring the much desired success? The Sun is ready and willing to extend a hand of welcome to Dr.

Carlisle and the Academy. It is ready and whiling to stand by him and the school and do its part to bring success to the school, incidentally to the town. Is the reader ready to join in the commendable supporter tins worthy Institution? If so use I your influence for it and never knock it. Many years ago a dry moon settled over Texas, and the throne of King Alcohol began to totter. The old king had wiela- ed the sceptre a long time, and of course was not to be dethroned in a month, a year or a decade. But the people digged about the foundations of the old throne even as the army of Cyrus digged about the walls of ancient Babylon. The capture, however, was not as that of Babylon, but was one post at a time.

First spots were made; not very dry, but dry enough to cause the drinkers some inconvenience. Bootleggers could work, cold storages could be operated and, there were many ways by which connection could be established between the drinker and the cup that cheers. But new laws were made that put the bootlegger and the cold storage over the dump, and the drinker then had to'depend upon the express of flees and the freight trains. This worked a little further incon- with trains running daily ami supply deists near the drouth was not seriously felt. Last winter the legislature passed a law prohibiting ship-; ments of intoxicants into dry ter- ritory from points.

This made the drinkers sit up and take notice. It did not close the pipe line but it lengthened the distance between the drinker; and the fountain and doubled freight and express charges. However, those who had the price could still have their toddies and their cold bottles by paying more and waiting longer. All these were but near drouths, but it seems that we are' up against a real drouth Last Monday the legislature took another fall out of the drinkers in dry territory, and this time they virtually closed the last door of hope. A law was passed prohibiting the shipment of intoxicants into dry territory from points outside the state.

There remains now but one way for the drinker to stock his pantry with the worm of the still or the brew' of Gambrinus. He must go in person to the place where wet goods are dispensed and jierson ally convey his drinkables from thence to his local deixisitory. Another person cannot perform this service for him, neither can the transportation companies assist him. The arm of man is not very long, neither is it very strong, and to carry a large supply of drinkables is therefore impossible. In our opinion it is now time to announce that the real drouth has come.
