Old, New jyQ Error in Football Credits at Boulder Penguins Win One By Associated Press The Pittsburgh Penguins used something old and something new to whip Los Angeles in the National Hockey League Wednesday night but something new was all Minnesota needed against Chicago. The Penguins got four goals in the first period, two from veteran Ken Schinkel, another from Andy Bathgate, who was playing his 999th NHL game, and one by rookie Greg Polis, and went on to a 5-3 victory over LA. Meanwhile, Minnesota used three rookies goalie Gilles Gilbert and forwards Judes Drouin and Buster Harvey to clip Chicago, 2-1. Elsewhere in the NHL Wednesday night, Toronto and New York bunched third period goals to score victories, the Maple Leafs whipping Montreal. 6-2 and the Rangers downing Detroit.

4-1. St. Louis took California, 3-2, in the other game. The Penguins, who had won only one of their first seven games, ganged up on Los Angeles early with Schinkel and Bathgate scoring in the first eight minutes. Dick Duff got one back for the Kings but Schinkel again and then Polis upped margin to 41.

The last two goals came 39 seconds apart and the Kings never recovered from that barrage. Gilbert, Minnesota's freshman goalie, turned in his second straight strong performance, stopping Chicago. The youngster kicked out 30 shots an easy night compared to the 46 saves he had in his first NHL start last week in Montreal. The North Stars won it on third period goal the first professional tally for the youngster who moved straight from the amateur ranks last season the NHL this year. Drouin, who was the scoring champ last year, scored other goal to celebrate his 22nd birthday.

New York and Detroit were locked in a 1-1 tie until halfway through the third period and then the Rangers wore the Wings down, bunching goals by Bill Fairbaim, Vic Hadfield and Walt Tkazuck for the victory'. Hadfield had two goals a-s New York stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games following an opening-night loss at St. Louis. Toronto also enjoyed a big third period, rushing four goals past a i Vachon to beat the Cana- diens. Ron first goal of the season started the third period spurt and then Guy Trottier, Dave Keon and Norm UUman also connected, wrapping up the victory for ex- Canadien goalie Jacques Plante.

St. Louis snapped a scoreless tie with goals by Barclay Plager and Chris Bordeleau in the final two minutes of the second period and went on to beat winless California. Plager hit at 17:59 and 1:13 later, Bordeleau scored. Rookie George Morrison made it 3-0 early in the third period and that gave the Blues enough of an edge to stand off late goals by Gary Croteau and Gary Jarrett. The Seals have only two ties to show for their first nine starts.

Kniglilis Bop Blazers, 3-2; Home Saturday Oklahoma City The Omaha Knights took undisputed possession of the Central Hockey League lead Wednesday night by defeating the Oklahoma City Blazers, 3-2. Omaha has a 4-1 record for the season while Oklahoma City is 2-2. Oklahoma City lied it up at 9:52 in the first period when Don Tannahill flipped the puck over Omaha goalie Peter McDuife after he made a save that sent him sprawling.

The Knights went ahead at 8:10 in the second period when Mike Murphy got an unassisted goal, but Blazer Bill Klatt evened the score again less than two minues later. Mike Parizeau put the Knights ahead to stay at 7:48 in the third period, scoring from 20 feet out after teammate Pierre Jarry drew the Oklahoma City goalie to the right of the net.
