to ignite a furnace pilot light Howard Strube 81 of 5605 42nd St suffered flash bums to his hands and face said Lynn Weaver a nursing supervisor at Immanuel Hospital Strube was treated and released Deaths and unerals OMAHA WORLD HERALD Saturday December 26 1992 the local news rating derby However Coleman insists there were limits to his deportment He has denied a report that he once dropped his pants on the air That apparently was the work of another weather cast er When Coleman moved to a Milwau kee TV station in 1965 he was asked to tone down his act because behavior that Omaha viewers found amusing would not be appreciated by the so phisticated populace of Wisconsin His hair also was a problem It was almost a crew cut Coleman called it a Point characterized by growth just long enough to permit a suggestion of a part on tne side 1 showed up for work in he said guy who had hired me took one look and buried his head in his hands He said my God no! Did I forget to tell you to let your hair It was a very conserv ative station in all ways politics in cluded I think they were a little worried about me in that respect But on the ourth of July I waved the flag a lot and that He began looking for other work and a year later joined the CBS owned station in Chicago Kalber working for the competing NBC station was the perennial king of the hews show CBS bosses were more tolerant than the folks in Milwaukee about his horseplay At least he occa sionally felt free to toss a spitball On one rainy day he arranged to have a family of ducks waddle across the set Then there was the time he removed a shoe exposing a big toe that had pushed its way through his sock The sock was strangling his foot he ex plained to viewers Newscast ratings improved and Co leman was given much of the credit for the eventual toppling of Kalber from his No 1 perch Morning Coleman had an offer to do weather for show but CBS held him to his contract However he later became a regular on Morning or several years he broadcast the weather reports from Chicago Coleman achieved what he consid ered the goal of his life in 1982 when he put his baby the Weather Channel on cable TV At first he had been almost alone in thinking that 24 hours of weather programming was a viable concept worked for three years trying to get it he said laughed at me from coast to coast The people thought the idea of a 24 hour weather channel was just about the funniest joke anybody ever came up with ABC CBS NBC Turn er They all laughed at But dreams do not die easily He eventually settled for finan cial backing of Landark Communica tions Inc The Atlanta anchored Weather Channel became a reality and soon was to prove his critics wrong The next year in a jubilant interview with the Newhouse News Service Co leman said intend to become a very rich He laughed when he said it but he did not consider it ajoke or some time he satisfied his com mitment to ABC by broadcasting his Morning weather casts from Atlanta He then put on his Weather Channel CEO hat running an operation that soon included 200 em ployees Coleman said projections did not call for the Weather Channel to turn a profit for two years However his contract with Landmark called for unrealistic performance standards fell 10 percent short of that and they used that to get rid of he said got a court injunction against them but they were not required to extend anymore money so there was no way I could go on had the option of buying them out for $4 million to be paid in 30 days There was no way 1 could raise that amount The value of the Weather Channel today is $400 million It makes a $25 million a year 24 HourNews Meanwhile he said had burned my bridges at so he went to work for WCBS in New York After a year he returned to Chicago and NBC teaming with old ratings foe Kalber About 1 8 months ago Coleman began putting together the stuff of another dream: a 24 hour television news station in Chicago would be a Chicago he said had ever tried to do He completed a detailed plan came up with a marketing scheme arranged financing and was set to go he said when the Tribune Co announced its intention of forming its own 24 hour news station was no way two 24 hour operations could Coleman said we talked and merged together I could have had a role in some capacity with the new company but I want in if I run it I got a very good settlement out of it 1 have no complaints at all about the He said his crushing disappointment over the escape of the Weather Chan nel gnaws on me But the past very excited about the present just happy to be back in Nebras parents were tired of children Thev But 1 noticed they did listen to i the same way when I decided to be an announcer on radio I used to stand in front of a mirror and talk into it and hear my voice bouncing back at In second grade he exhibited the kind of aggressive ambition that was to characterize his adult career day the teacher said our class was supposed to prepare a program for a PTA meeting I suggested that we do a radio program and I would be the announcer home I began programs to my parents through the hot air registers using the basement as my studio I played records and read stories from the Any thing for Attention Later the family moved to Carbon dale Ill where Coleman's father joined the faculty of the University of Southern Illinois When youngest son John started high school he went to work for a local radio station As a freshman at the University of Illinois he got a full time job at a Cham television station Announcing ing news Doing weather year I did the jerkiest thing Coleman said cring ing with the memory of it was very impressed with myself I was cocky I never met anybody quite as brassy as I was sent out Christmas cards with my picture on the front wearing a plastic TV smile They said Coleman Television Yes I actually did it No I trying to be funny I was quite Coleman majored in journalism and television at Illinois He earned a minor in meteorology and after gradu ation completed training as a meteo rologist In 1965 Omaha station KETV hired him on the strength of his zany man antics while reporting the weather in Champaign He was known to stand on his head to invite rain He sometimes The anything to get viewer atten tion formula worked in Omaha and Wacky Weather Guy Back He had been in Chicago the previous six years doing weather for the NBC owned station on which another Omaha alumnus loyd Kalber is anchor man of the early evening news was at an age when I asked myself what I wanted to do for the rest of my Coleman said owner ship appealed to me There were bar gains to be had Some people say commercial TV stations are dinosaurs that they be able to compete with cable and so Coleman buy the dinosaur theory were making the same dismal predictions about radio in the he said made radical changes and has grown every He sees similar opportunities in television looked coast to coast for the right place to land" he said was more appealing than Boombox Voice At 55 Coleman looks much the same as he did in his Omaha days although his hair once trimmed close to his head is longer and has turned white About his disdain of a topcoat: He was kidding well a bit at least His wife Cheryl was flying in that evening from Chicago with their two dogs and the rest of wardrobe inchiding warm coats voice is distinctive It would be an attention getter even in a chorus of typically deep down broad caster voices The Coleman sound emerges from the throat with
