expected) Dick Blanchard has returned to the Uni versity of Tulsa this time as a law student a role which fits him at least as well as No 90 The TU law school is where Blanchard was going to end up next year anyway He put it off one year because of an old fashioned Hemingwayish style desire to prove he could make it in the romantic and brutal world of pro football about the only frontier left Tor knights errant and one that pays much better than the foreign legion When Blanchard went into pro football It was with obvious poor relation status He even drafted after his senior season and the Ralph McGill Jeane Barrett Arthur Moore Drew Pearson Ed White Hurricane of 1971 were intensively scouted He had already been accepted to law school a near life long goal But the desire to see just where he stood as a football player made him want to accept a free agent offer from New England and Patriot aide Tom Boisture a former TU assis tant) asked him to try out So Blanchard compromised a his sights on two years one to satisfy his I showed pride and a second to provide a fi nancial boost for his legal edu cation i That Blanchard achieved only half his goals is ironic He was victimized by the migra tion of Chuck airbanks from Norman to Boston and the sub sequent house cleaning that is standard operating procedure for new regimes Things ul imately came down to a deci sion between Blanchard and ex TU teammate Steve King a contest in which newcomer King had a definite edge first I was savs planchard who got more than a little I told you so ego inflation when Simpson rushed for 250 NL record yards against New England just two weeks after his axing the more I think about it the more I realize I Was in a very expendable position airbanks going to go up there and lose with somebody players He was going to go with the players he brought i No 'Ex Jock' Tag Here i Still despite that handicap Blanchard lasted until the last cut In his second season proving himself (and to a leagueful of scouts) to be a lot more football player than most In an Average pro preseason camp there are 35 40 returnees from the previous year 15 25 draft choices and 50 60 free agents Blan chard twice finished in the upper half of the ruthless survival sweepstakes 1 When it was suddenly all over Blanchard thrown into the world unexpectedly and undegreed with the usual label He in effect had been playing out a unique op tion not between teams but between the simplifed win lose world of athletics and the other 9944 per cent of life And although much more of an establishment man than themajority of his generation own limited objectives would never allow him to become either a pro football 'in or a fringe player hoping for an organizational job man His observations therefore give a much needed contrast to the endless (and obviously very successful) rah rah offerings of Pete high powered public relations staff which have maae pro looioaii as important politically as Watergate 4 Despite ms Blanchard is impressed with airbanks think he him self is the most brilliant coach in the world But for building a winning organization right at the top He showed that at Oklahoma And the assistant coaches hired are superior The new linebacker coach (Chuck Sumner whom airbanks lured away from the rising Pittsburgh Steelers) is probably the tnost brilliant football mind ever been Garrett Well Received Much travelled Carl Garrett (a mini Duane Thomas in size talent and absence from practice) was a teammate last year and gets surprisingly sympathetic evaluation from Blanchard whose devotion to practice and respect for coaches are practically leg endary at Tulsa I Garrett missed practice once or twice a week But it bother the players and it affect Garrett on Sunday He still played great games But I think' it really bugged the front office Garrett embarrassed them and why he was traded not because he had a bad effect on the team He Blanchard has a unique view about the ever serious in jury rate in the ultra violent game think one of the reasons is the equipment There is so much stress on speed that equipment is becoming lighter and lighter More and more padding is being removed particularly from helmets think this is very dangerous especially since the players are now so big and fast Every team has 250 pounders who can run 45 In college meet a guy like that once or twice a season I believe that some day because of this be reading about deaths instead of injuries in pro Losing Blanchard says hurt in pro football at least not to last woeful Patriots of the little known facts about pro football is that there is unlimited free beer for the players on the charter flight back home Last year after we lost STILLWATER Oklahoma to Miami 52 0 we drank up all the
