vastly supe rior Oklahoma spent most ot tne afternoon ooserving tne results of various experiments and almost incidentally blitzed to a 52 10 victory over badly mismatched West Virginia Things went almost exactly according to a script that had the third ranked Sooners favored by 35 points OU had covered half of that spread with the game less than eight minutes old whigh undoubtedly caused mixed emotions in the crowd of 71187 Most undoubtedly wanted to see a Sooner romp but the ease with which the OU regulars were cutting up the Mountaineers both offensively and defensively almost certainly made many wonder if a ringside view of the bloodbath was worth suffering under temperatures that were 94 de grees at game time and got higher Most of them stuck it out through the first half al though 80 people had to be treated at tne tirst aia siauon But after OU scored a pair of touchdowns less than two minutes into the second half to build a 45 3 lead the exits were immediately jammed Only a relative handful were around at the finish to watch freshman quarterback Kelly Phelps direct a fourth quarter drive for the final touchdown Oklahoma did get one scare in the game when star quarterback Hoffman (7) At right Thomas Lott of OU pitches ball as he is tackled by Ken Braswell Watts guided a reserve dominated team on a 67 yard scoring march to build a 31 0 bulge less than halfway through the second period At that point Oklahoma had picked up 250 total yards and was averaging over seven yards per offensive play West Virginia by contrast had only 18 yards and one first down out of seven possessions Whatever point that was going to be made had ob viously been conclusively settled and the Sooners began looking at some of their younger talent instead of trying to amass an astronomic point total that might elevate them one spot on the polls Halfback Billy Sims who had 106 yards and three long gainers out of just seven first half carries would run with the ball just once more in the game ullback Kenny King who had 49 yards on just five carries did not carry the ball again starting offensive team did return at the start of the second half probably just for some tune up work TU Sub jects Cajuns to Ambush 10 3 By BILL CONNORS World Sports Editor Tulsa lived through a perilous first half on its best defensive perfor mance in two years and reserve quarterback Bill Blankenship passed to flanker Jerry Taylor for a 31 yard touchdown in the third quarter Saturday night as the unbeaten Hurricane defeated Southwestern Louisiana 10 3 The victory equalled total last year and gave the Hurricane its first 3 0 football start since 1967 An estimated turnout of 2i500 at Skelly Stadium saw defense dominate the sweltering night It was only the second time in the last 83 games an opponent failed to score a touchdown A 9 3 upset of Ar kansas in 1976 was last such masterpiece Tulsa missed its first shutout in 11 years only because an interception and runback in the final minute of the first half enabled the Cajuns to get position for a 42 yard field goal by John Roveto That matched a field goal of the same distance by Stu Crum only three minutes earlier to give Southwestern a 3 3 tie at halftime Linebackers Reggie Epps and John Brown safties Lovie Smith and Mike Menefee nose guard Bell Oliver ends DeWalden Irazier Don Blackmon and Steve Hatcher and cornerback Charles Washington made the strangling plays on defense for TU They stopped the Cajuns three times inside the 13 in the first halt when the Hurricane offense was inept The threats were mainly a result of inability to make first downs But when TU got respectable on offense in the second half and the defense had field position the Hurricane overwhelmed the Cajun attack They gained only 84 yards in the second half and crossed midfield only twice They did not make a first down on five consecutive possessions On their final possession the Cajuns drove to 46 But No 2 quarter back David Guidry no relation to Cajun alumnus and Yankee pitching superstar Ron Guidry was intercepted by Smith at the TU 23 with 17 seconds left TU then began to think about next homecoming game with Kan sas State The loss was the second in as many games for the Cajuns who ranked high on priority list because of a 48 21 victory last year The Cajuns were shut out by Long Beach last week and have scored only 46 points in their last six games Tulsa made only two first downs on its first five possessions and did not cross its 38 but survived with no worse than a 3 3 halftime tic thanks to its defense The Hurricane thwarted the Cajuns without a point on three threats inside the 13 TU stopped the visitors on downs at the eight at the 12 on a fumble recovery and at the 13 on an end zone interception first threat was made possible by cornerback Ron interception off Rader and return of 29 yards to the TU 39 Two pass completions gave the Cajuns a second and one at the seven at which point defense rose to the occasion with three consecutive fine plays Linebackers Reggie Epps and John Brown in for his first play denied tailback Booker Price a first down on the first play Strong safety Lovie Smith knocked down Matthews' pass in the end zone on third down Nose guard Dell Oliver and end Don Blackmon threw fullback Allen Stainbier for a one yard loss on fourth down Before the first quarter was over the Cajuns threatened a second time when flanker Nat Durant got behind cornerback Charles Washington for a 37 yard reception to 12 But on the next play Matthews fumbled when tackled by end Steve Hatcher and Washington recovered ree safety Mike Menefee made the third save for TU by intercepting Continued on 12 Seminoles Take to Air OSU Takes to Err By CLAY HENRY World Sports Writer
