through what looks like an ex citing number conveying rhythms and urgency their plumes and grass skirts in movement the costumes and body paint expressing the cultural impor tance of what doing The album does not contain thrilling African music or try to express these roots The are too sophisticated too much a part of urban American black culture to bring that off anyway But the implication of the front cover and the back photo of the O'Jays in a blur of swirling choreography on stage is that the and their music are as important and meaningful to their culture as the tribesmen are to theirs a valid thought and only a little exaggerated KENNETH GAMBLE WHO ALONG with Leon Huff wrote six of the album's songs tries in a convoluted sopho moric way to express the es sence in a brief liner note Basically that the are out to convey their ideas of human wisdom love and understanding and straighten out those whose lives have been bewildered and troubled ortunately the O'Jays don't get all that in their songs There is usually one nutshelled or plea in each song and surrounded by strong rhythms and some of the best vocals and arranging in pop music avorite cuts on the album are three arranged early in the morning with few casual ties among the raiders or hostages An elderly British citizen (played Sun day by Sylvia Sidney) who had been hospitalized nearby was not rescued and sources subsequently indicated she was murdered by the Ugandans There is little room in the Entebbe story for philosophizing on the merits of the Palestinian or Israeli causes The brutality of the terrorists and Amin's troops went beyond politics Sunday film certainly did not allow for such reminating although Horst Bucholz as the leader was permitted to act like a decent human being when the raid takes place The production values on the film were generally excellent considering the speed with which it was made in California Altogether on En was a pretty rousing three hours LOS ANGELES CBS Television Brig Gen Dan Shomron and Vaphet Kotto played Uganda President Idi Amin with a kind of cheerfully sinister bluster that if the research on his conduct was correct must have been terrifying under the circumstances The film which its producers insist may be the most expensive ever made for television was quite a cut above recent quickie at En which relied too heavily on the formula to keep the story moving True there was a certain amount of character establishment among the air plane passengers as the story began no other way to tell the story after all') but it was kept to a mini mum and focused instead on the three or four principals who were to carry the action forward MARTIN BALSAM WAS INE AS the thoughtful go between from the first class section and Eddie Constan tine the European abilities He uses a floral lavish introduction as a kind of musical foreplay to set off sensitive ex plorations of tlie possibilities Hurd's bass work provides a loving tasteful foundation for Jamal Other vintage tune the Guy Wood Robert Mellin One arid Only gets an emotional dramatic tender treatment As bass walks (now and then two stepping) along un derneath Jamal seems to go skywrit ing with now simple now thrilling runs that soar up and down drift left and right with a loving message coming down finally on a cushion of Hurd's bow work You had forgotten how gor geous this song can be Two Jamal compositions and occupy side two The first is rather chaotic and cluttered by percussion at the start then goes off in a gently funky direction perhaps in an evocation of the easy going am bience It has a swinging melody but tends toward cliche Keys takes a moderately interesting solo but he tends to be stylistically undistinguished It is the weakest cut does what the title im plies it is an interestingly schi zophrenic tune that has two melodic and rhythmic thrusts battling it out One is a fast walk paced bluesy and swinging line that catches occasional heat from the drums After the initial shoot out it is first to cross the bridge Jamal keeps it lively and allows it to dominate The other melody is back at the end and both go out in a cloud of notes Out with a isn't Jamal's best or most interesting effort but is quite a nice diversion from the humdrum BUTLER I Eg 1 Sv 1 1 if b' 7 'V i Kry 1 1 lOOk II Hi id IS 4 1 1 Jm MV ISBW uLi 1 1 1 1 1 fJi IliifeL I 1 1 1 30 500 My
