Carbon dioxide the most common of the so called greenhouse gases is increasing in the atmosphere faster than in the 1960s and early 1980s a federal agency reports According to a study by Dr Pieter Tans of the National Oceanic and Atmo spheric Administration (NOAA) the concentration of carbon dioxide rose at an average rate of 171 parts per million over the last four years That is somewhat faster than the 15 parts per million rise reported in much of the 1980s In the 1960s the increase was reported at only seven tenths of 1 part per million annually think there is a tendency for the rate to be still increasing but it go smoothly just like the Tans said Thursday (carbon dioxide) increase varies a lot from year to year One year it can change very little and the next year it makes up for the slow he said in a telephone interview the moment it seems to be increasing fairly Causing Concern Concentrations of carbon dioxide methane nitrous oxide CC 11 and CC 12 are monitored by Cli mate Monitoring and Diagnostics Labo ratory in Boulder Colo The increasing amount of these gases in the air has caused concern in recent years They are produced by industrial processes heating and other human activities as well as some natural sources Many scientists worry that the gases will act somewhat like a greenhouse causing Earth to overheat The shortwave radiation from the sun that warms the Earth passes through the gases easily but they can trao the longer wave radiation from Earth that normally cools the planet and keeps overall temperatures in balance Global concentrations of carbon diox ide have increased about 25 percent since the mid 1800s to just over 350 parts per million However scientists disagree over whether any global heating has already occurred ossil uel Burning Increasing the atmospheric level of carbon dioxide by 1 part per million requires the addition of 213 billion tons of carbon to the air Much of this occurs through the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil Other greenhouse gases are much less common Methane concentrations rose by 12 parts per billion per year although officials said this growth rate may have declined slightly Nitrous oxide increased at a rate of seven tenths of 1 part per billion per year CC 11 was rising at 10 parts per trillion while the rate for CC 12 was 16 parts per trillion Both of these chemi cals are chlorofluorocarbons used in refrigeration and other industrial pro cesses They also can damage the protective ozone layer and an international agreement has been signed to reduce their use Major Increase Seen In Teen Birth Rate The New York Times Washington An 18 year long de cline in teen age birth rates has re versed itself abruptly with the sharpest increase among mothers 15 to 17 years old the federal government reported The finding by the National Center for Health Statistics drew concern from health experts and social scien tists who chart the health risks and economic hardship long associated with unwed teen age motherhood "Any time you see an increase in births to younger teens alarm said Ron of the Defense und a non profit advocacy group based in Washington pregnancy is a roadblock to all kinds of things for young people and the younger it happens the more of a roadblock it Researchers said it was not clear whether the rise in births to teen agers reflected more sexual activity less use of contraception and abortion services or a combination of both factors US Seeks Access WOMEN SOLDIERS: Women in US armed forces raise eyebrows among Saudi men Page6 1 Amencans Iraq
