9 pm newscast is going to be a success because it makes use of a formula that has already proven suc cessful Protter pointed out that prime time newscasts are doing well on indepen dent stations in other cities including Milwaukee Minneapolis and St Louis The basic editorial approaches used by those newscasts will also work in Omaha he said The goal of Nine Nightly which begins Thursday will be to show how national and world events affect the lives of people in this area he said using the elements which are used in these other successful Midwest newscasts and making sure that the editorial judgment is smack dab here in Omaha we have no question going to Protter said Omaha will be the fourth city in which Protter has launched newscasts on independent stations The others were Milwaukee St Louis and Sacra mento Calif The newscast will be anchored by Amy Elizabeth Hanten news director and John Dobken Ms Hanten High Rather than taking the lowest com mon denominator in an attempt to attract viewers as is sometimes done in television KPTM plans on the high Protter said are not going to show the outside of a Kentucky ried Chicken store 90 minutes after it was robbed and show the red and blue lights flashing on top of a police he said not going to show the chalk outline on the side walk with the blood in the middle of the chalk Protter said KPTM executives don't think the type of news that would appeal to the station's target audience KPTM he said has in mind very specific viewer we're trying to The station he said wants to serve person who is too busy at 5:30 to be at home to watch one of the three network news KPTM President Harry Pappas said KPTM does not consider its news the context of a competitive offer or a program that is designed to compete with the 10 pm newscasts on three other commercial sta tions The newscast instead fits within longtime mission of trying to offer alternative programming in time periods when it is not otherwise avail able Protter said local network affiliates typically pay a lot of attention to the introduction of a newscast on an independent station but they shouldn't think KPTM is out to take their audi ence One large category of viewers KPTM hopes to attract he said is "the news who will watch news at 9 pm and another local news cast at 10pm Pappas said though that a certain percentage of viewers will have their
