Good show. An old school friend of Maude's pays a visit. Instead ol the drab and sad spinster Maude was expecting, mousey Phyllis surprises by being a winner in every way. 8:30 p. m. (S)-Tuesday Movie of the Week. "Home for the Holidays." (1972). Eleanor Parker, Sally Field, Julie Harris, Walter Brennan and Jessica Walters, are the stars of this murder melodrama which uses all the standard tricks to convey terror.

The story finds unhappy daughters returning to their father's bedside for a family get-together, only to become the target of a deranged killer. The chief suspect is step-mother Julie Harris, who is labeled a poisoner. Miss Harris attempts to hold the show together, backed by heroine Sally Field, the only balanced member of the family. 10:00 p. m.

(U OS CD America. "Home From Home." Host-narrator Alistair Cooke continues his colorful, intensely personal history of America, with an analysis of the contrasting life-styles and cultural beliefs of the early settlers of our shores. Starting with the 1606 journey of the Englishmen who came to Virginia looking for gold, and were saved, in the final analysis, by the Indian crop of tobacco, Mr. Cooke neatly documents his theory that the farming of this crop and its patterns established the life style of the Southern gentleman. He then goes on in painstaking fashion to detail the differing characteristics of the sterner Puritans who came over on the Mayflower.

10:00 p. m. (3) Marcus Welby, M.D. "Jason, Be Nimble, Jason Be Quick." The good doctor Welby deals with arthritis in a boy and the lad's estranged parents. Welby 's main job is to prevent the boy's father from running off again, avoiding responsibility, and star Robert Young, does the persuading with his customary charm and logic.

(1968) Psychological thriller revolves around a dis- Frequency (11 IF) station, in eluding equipment and buildings located on Ivory Avenue, North Hills, to Leon Crosby and a group of associates. Crosby, owner of KEMO.

Chan-nel 21), In San Francisco, is report Mr. Fanning ed to have Pittsburgh financial backers in the move to revive, for the second time, the UHF outlet, which first went on the air as WK.JF-TV in the summer of 1953, and off again the next year. According to Gil Lucas, community relations director nnd sole employe of the new organization at this writing, the station will follow "in part" the programming of its immediate forerunner. It will, however, have a shorter day, coming on the sir at about 3:30 p. m.

with children's programming. it i AT THE outset, WPGH-TV will begin its early evening programming with re-runs of popular former network series, such as "Star Trek." Actually, a limitless pack-Age presents itself. Feature films "of late vintage" will telecast from 7:30 to 9:30, followed by a former network scries stripped across the board until 10 p. m. On UHF in a major market, the station will he exempt from the FCC rule which forbids such rc-runs in prime time on the Very High Frequency (VHF) commercial outlets, such as Channels 2, 4 and 11.

Movies will also be the order nf the WPGH tube from 10 o'clock until 12:30 a.m. sign-off. However, the 10 p. m. films would be what Lucas describes as "classic movies" drawing room comedy, black and white Westerns, etc.

There would be a five minute break for news and sports at 11 o'clock. NATURALLY. THE station plans to take full advantage of any network programming which is pre-empted by the regular affiliates. While not wanting to commit himself, Lucas pointed out that both Channels 2 and 11 regularly schedule local films in place of the CBS and NBC first-TV-run features (they make more money that way) and the networks might be willing to have their films picked up by Channel 53. There arc, of course, many other network programs preempted on a regular, or on a elective, basis by the network Honolulu Zoo Proves Popular HONOLULU (AP) Newly compiled figures show the Honolulu Zoo continued as the most popular attraction among Hawaii's parks and museums in 1972, drawing 1,107,000 visitors in the first six months.

The least popular attraction was me Waioli House, a restored missionary residence on Kauai Island, which only 426 persons visited. The best bargains in this "burg" abound in the Post-Caret Want Ads. Check them today and everyday. 1 affiliates which might become available to WPGH-TV. "The station will try for a good movie and sports image," Lucas told me.

In the sports area it would try to pick up college football and basketball games not carried by the VHF outlets here. It would also seek to carry any network sports not accepted by affiliates here. i i ANOTHER FEATURE of the new station will be a one-hour black-oriented variety show which has proven extremely successful in San Francisco. When I suggested a local "entertainment bulletin board," using clips from films and stills from plays on local view, Lucas said he thought that might well be an idea to be incorporated into the schedule. Most certainly, for former Channel 53 viewers, the news that a Saturday night horror movie program is all set, will be welcome.

No local programming Is planned for the immediate future, except the 11 p. m. news brenk and a host for one or more of the movie sessions, "with success, this will change, of course," Lucas saic. A sports score "crawler" is planned when important games are being played. WHY THE optimism on the part of the new owners? Well, for one thing, it has now been 10 years since the government required all new TV receivers to be equipped with UHF tuning dials.

These, with a simple ring antenna should, in most locations, assure a good picture from the station's 3.1 million watt signal as compared with 100,000 for Channel 2 and 315.000 for VHF stations from Channel 7 on up to 13. Secondly, Lucas pointed out, the ever-increasing number of cable TV companies "should be a great help." The cables can, naturally, bring in Channel 53 even in fringe areas. Lucas also noted, for the record, that while the former WPGH-TV operated with the same power, its antenna was discovered to be tilted. As a result many of the relatively local areas were in "shadow," severely cutting down on the station's potential audience. This, he assures me, has been corrected.
