conservation tech niques have netted Pan Amer ican World Airways 40000000 gallons of aviation fuel saved in the first nine months of 1974 An additional 10000000 gallon savings is forecast for the last quarter of 1974 The savings are in terms of improved miles per gallon and are in addition to scheduled flight cutbacks and adjust ments The conservation measures have resulted in a 45 per cent reduction in Pan fuel consumption in 1974 Based on actual costs the airline pre diets a savings of $171 million on its 1974 fuel bill A fuel sav ings goaf of $25 million plus is predicted for 1975 Capt William A director flight operations tech mcal and chairman of Pan uel task force said the airline will use about 1060 bil lion gallons of aviation fuel in compared with 1184 bil lion in 1973 A PRIME ACTOR IN PAN fuel conservation pro gram is a slight speed reduc tion on the fleet of Boeing 707 and 727 jet trans ports But several engineering and technical modifications to aircraft and a number of re vised procedures used by flight crews and dispatchers also figure in the fuel savings John Borger vice pres ident and chief engineer de scribes the technical modifica tions as: A concentrated program un dertaken jointly by the engi neering and maintenance de partments to insure that air craft surfaces are namically Modifications to leading and trailing edge flaps and eleva tors on 747s to reduce drag and weight Modifications to 747 engines and nacelles essentially to im prove the voice characteristics but also to cut fuel consumption Borger said modifications to the JT9D7 turbofan en gine nacelles are bringing the aircraft into compliance with the lategt version of ederal Aviation Administration regu lation noise rules He said PAN AM is realizing a 3 to 35 per
