CLEMSON NEBRASKA HARRY SAID 1 I 1IIW of tL By Steve Sinclair World Herald Staff Writer Miami The door was open just enough that Nebraska could have possiblyslipped inside It was ajar just enough to cause Clemson more than casual concern that the grasp it seemed to have on its first national championship was slip ping away were trying to make it close" said Clemson Coach Danny ord hardly stand it" But in the end Clemson quar terback Homer Jordan slipped away one final time and the Tigers staked a convincing claim to its first national title with a 22 15 victory over the Cornhuskers in theOrange Bowl Clemson Image Changes very proud of our players not only for the game to night but for the entire said ord this year I think they will refer to us as a basketball The top ranked Tigers are in the Atlantic Coast Conference that is known most for the caliber of basket ball it plays Nebraska was plagued by penalties and mistakes through a trying first half but managed to put toget her one final drive in the fourth quarter that kept the outcome in doubt until the end or the most part the suspense seemed to be gone as the Huskers ended the third quarter trailing 22 7 Game Livened by Huskers But Nebraska livened things up for the 72748 fans by marching 69 yards in eight plays for Roger 26 yard touchdown run and then added ranked Clemson completed a perfect season by beating Nebraska 22 15 in theOrange Bowl Coach Vince Dooley of Georgia called Marino a great great quarterback The tight end (Brown) made a great play and Marino made a great play But I think we can play any better We played our hearts out Swarming Defense Marino completed 26 of 41 passes for 261 yards He brought the Panth ers back in the final four minutes after Georgia had taken a 20 17 ad vantage midway through the final quarter of the game watched by a crowd of 77224 in the Louisiana Su perdome Marino who finished with three touchdown passes in the game hit Brown on a 6 yarder early in the season at the University of Washington acting like Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Allen riday afternoon just being Jacque Robinson proved too much for the University of Iowa football team Robinson a freshman who hide his aspirations to follow Allen as a winner of the coveted Heis man award delivered one of the out standing performances of the 68th Rose Bowl game Robinson shredded defense for 142 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 34 yards as Washington ended storybook season with a 28 0 defeat before a crowd of 105611 in the oldest of the postseason football clas sics The game itself was no classic In stead it represented an embarrass ing finish to an otherwise outstanding season for the Hawk eyes who were playing on New Day because they had posted their best campaign in more than two decades The estimated 40000 lowans who so proudly sported the Black and Gold in their travels west might be tempt ed to slip into something less conspic uous for the trip home after the performance which more closely resembled the kind of efforts turned in by the 1971 Hawkeyes (1 10) instead of the 1981 bunch Iowa quarterback Gordy Bohannon fumbled twice and threw two inter ceptions Reserve Pete was nothing new The Huskers were penalized six times for 54 yards in the first half The penalties were a major reason that the Tigers kept Nebraska pinned in a hole much of the first 30 minutes
