i 2 SECTION or Kids Not Grownups Circus Here Professional But Reporter Disappointed Sometime during the past 20 or so years although I begin to pinpoint the time either the circus has changed or changed Maybe it's because insteadof me being the one squirming in my seat and yelling for cot ton candy or a Mickey Mouse 'balloon or one of those toys to a stick that never seem to last until you get them home the one who is THIS SUMMER! OBUGITION MERCHANTS CENTRAL 4111 So 70th Ave liCHRYSLER CORPORATION being squirmed at and yelled at Or maybe because that once colorful kaleidoscopic maze of spectators ushers and hawkers now seem to be a part of a covert conspiracy to send me home with an empty billfold bubblegum on my shoe sole and Pepsi stains on my pant leg Whatever it is something has happened NOW I NOTICE THAT BEH ind those oil pigment smiles and strutting gestures of bra vado there are facial expres sions not unlike those on people who come out of office buildings at 4:30 pm or serve you lunch from behind a coun ter the unfriendly look of people working hard for a liv ing The tigers that used to be so sleek and ferocious now seem to be somewhat old and fat They seem to sit lazily almost unconcernedly on their per ches twitching and glancing at the audience almost anx ious to get back in their little compartments I guess they were always there although I never used to notice those little wrist straps and waist buckles that wouldn't allow a lovely lady twirling on a rope to fall to the floor if she wanted to This is not to knock the Ak a i ne Circus which opened Thursday in the As sembly Center because it's a pretty good circus Maybe not as grandiose as some but a solid professional dependable circus with nearly everything you expect from a circus and no surprises WELL ALMOST NO prises There was one point during an aerial act when the lady aerialist came flying right out at the audience and (I divulge the ending) startled me right out of my disillusionment And there was a good flying trapeze act in which a daring young man put a black bag over his head and tried to do a flying somersault without even being able to see the catcher And the elephant act was bet ter than many seen My favorite was a midget who did a very funny clown act on the trampo spending half the act try ing to get up on the trampoline and then falling off or falling through the springs But even he seemed a little like he had done the same act half the nights of his life and could look forward to doing again for more than half the nights of the rest COURSE ME THAT has changed but I help but wish it were the circus Circuses must be for kids who see any tiger as ferocious and any clown as happy Circuses must be for kids be cause as I looked around the Assembly Center Thursday I noticed happilv that the kids loved house the cafe and the pool hall He is the last cowboy Sam has become a foster fa ther to Sonny (Timothy Bot toms) a high school senior quietly ambling through life as typical a boy of the period as you could ever ask father is seen only once and unless she slipped by unno ticed his mother is not intro duced at all Like so many youngsters Sonny has had to turn to other adults to learn the things about life his parents were somehow unable to teach rom the wife (Cloris Leach man) of the basketball coach Sonny learns a little about the feminine mystique and a lot about sex rom Sam he learns to respect people cher ish and enjoy life And from a 40ish blond (Ellen Burstyn) on the make yet miserable he lears to face life with gritty determination and eyes always open for a speck of happiness THE PICTURE IS ALSO about best friend Duane (Jeff Bridges) who is a contrast to Sonny While Sonny seems a little sleepy and slow and has no particularly shin ing qualities Duane is the town ootball
