SpJDJdA 20 SjjdwyL TULSA OKLAHOMA SUNDAY OCTOBER 11 1970 Ump's Call Helps Birds Past Cincy 1 i Burkhart said: I have to take bat in Orioles season against got it CINCINNATI Veteran third baseman Brooks Robinson gave the Baltimore Orioles the run they needed with a homer and veteran umpire Ken Burkhart made a home plate call they needed as the Orioles edged Cin cinnati 4 3 Saturday in the opening game of the World Scries Robinson went only for 19 as the Orioles were upended by the New York Mets in the World Series last year But he snapped a 3 3 tie in the seventh inning Saturday with a home run that put the finishing flourish on a three homer Baltimore barrage homer came only a half inning after the Orioles had gotten the call they needed from Burkhart That came after Bernie Carbo walked with one out and Tom my Helms followed with a single Carbo raced around to third on the play and streaked home when pinch hitter Ty Clme tapped in front of the plate As Carbo neared the plate he upended Burkhart while Hendricks lunged for the tag off fast in this one on a run producing third But then Baltimore starter Jim Palmer settled down and the Orioles displayed their own power against Gray Nolan irst baseman Boog Powell the hulking blond bomber got two runs back with a homer in the fourth and Hendricks tied it with a homer in the fifth That set the stage for the heroics by Robinson who also made a sensational field ing play in the sixth inning as the Orioles took a 1 0 lead in the opener of this best of 7 series Robinson who entered the season consid ered by many too old after two lackluster seasons flashed his fielding skill at the start of the sixth inning when he took a hit away from May eventually saving a run that could have been driven in when Helms singled later in the inning Then the disputed call by Burkhart helped the Orioles keep alive a season ending winning streak that now stretches to 15 victories Tolan got things started for the Reds again in the third when he led off by drawing a walk on a 3 2 pitch He stole second and two outs later rode home when May tagged an 0 2 pitch over the left field fence just inside the foul line Suddenly however the momentum seemed to and it was the Orioles tagging Nolan Paul Blair the slender center fielder started it for Baltimore by beating out a roller down the third base line with one out in the fourth inning for the first hit Powell then lugged his over 250 pound frame to the plate and sliced a 2 0 pitch to the opposite field The ball carried over the left field fence for a home run Hendricks who weighs almost 100 pounds less than Powell then tied it in the fifth inning by drilling Nolan's first pitch over the right field fence for bis homer I Burkhart prone signaled for the out Carbo argued Manager Spar ky Anderson argued The crowd of 51531 howled in derision our towels were sailed out of the dugout But the decision stood And Anderson re fused to complain after the game explain ing quietly: umpire beat Baltimore did it by putting three over the fence Carbo told me Hendricks never tagged him with his glove hand and had the ball in the other hand Carbo said Hendricks tagged Burkhart thought Burkhart was falling and see the play I asked Burkhart: did you see him tag I saw him tag the word for The Reds also got collecting three runs single by catcher Johnny Bench in the first inning and Lee May's two run homer in the And so when Robinson came to the seventh it was still 3 3 and the who had won their last 11 regular games and three playoff games Minnesota needed a run Robinson on a pitch golfing a Nolan serve over the left field fence for his homer Palmer a fi foot 3 196 pound righthander got off to a shaky start but shared the first game heroics with Robinson as he pitched five hit ball before being relieved by Pete Richert with two out in the ninth But before the young righthander who will be 25 next Thursday settled down the Reds had struck for the three runs The Reds opened up in the first in ning with one out when Bobby Tolan lined a 1 2 pitch to right center field for a double Tolan cruised into third when Tony Perez flied deep to right Johnny Bench the No 1 bomber in the Cincinnati arsenal then lined the next pitch to left field for a single that brought Tolan home 4Z 1 pi ri Z' HORNS CRUNCH 0U WISHBONE Errors Offset Sooners' Bid In 41 9
