I was wondering if ABC did the coverage during the 1968 Summer Olympics as it did this year? My friend has me confused because he said NBC did it that year. I'm referring only to the Summer Olympics of 1968.

T.R. A. It was ABC-TV. The network did a splendid job of bringing sports fans the exciting events of the 1968 Summer Olympics from Mexico City. 'MASH; 'Streets of Frisco Reviewed BY NOW you have probably noticed that while it is still light years behind the big screen, in so far as freedom of expression is concerned, television this season is at least inching up on big brother.

r1- ft 0 Peppard appeared comfortable in his role, going about his job in an urbane, thoroughly professional manner. This Wednesday it will be "Madigan," with Richard Widmark, with the third of the trilogy, "Cool Million," starring James Farentino, then coming along to complete the cycle prior to Banacek's return. FROM THE advance publicity, most of it dwelling on the attention being paid to an authentic recreation of the events and lifestyles of the late 1930s, I had looked for ward eagerly to "Banyon." This is another private eye yarn, with Robert Forster in the title role and Joan Blondell and Richard Jaeckel aboard for support. This Quinn Martin produc-tion, filmed at the Burbank Studios, formerly Warner Brothers, and on location in Los Angeles, made its bow on Friday night (Channel 11). It became quickly evident that no one concerned with its manufacture had the slightest idea what direction he or she was supposed to take.

The whole hour looked and played like a "C-movie" out of Republic, ineptly based on the old Warner pot-boilers. Even a sequence in which the voice of England's king was heard in praise of the woman he loved was blown by having it come out of a desk radio with just Forster and Miss Blondell listening. If ever a recreation of a historic moment cried out for the response of a larger audience, this was it. As presented, the scene was simply a throwa-way vignette. IT IS probably unfair to review "The Streets of San Francisco" after its two-hour special premiere on Saturday night (Channel 4).

However, this time the same Quinn Martin would appear to have scored a solid hit. In fact the regular hour -long entrees should be stronger. Much of the opener was properly devoted to establishing the characters of Det. Lt. Mike Stone, a widower, played by Karl Maiden, and his swinging youthful sidekick, detective Steve Keller, portrayed by Kirk Douglas' offspring, Michael.

It also served to introduce the city, with extensive location filming of the highest order. The plot, having to do with a mad actor-turned-killer, could have been scribbled on the back of a postcard. However, it did give an indication of the newfound freedom noted in MASH." It was brought out that a murdered girl had been having a casual affair with a young lawyer, the chief suspect, having suggested to him, in his apartment, "Why don't we take a shower and well make some pancakes?" BOTH DETECTIVES were convincingly portrayed, with Maiden giving his usual polished performance, including a sampling of way with foreign languages, and young Douglas proving that what ever his father's professional limitations, he sired a talented son. Robert Wagner acquitted himself splendidly as the lawyer-suspect. The title, with its asterisks, was, I guessed, about all that would make it from the big screen to the small one. Not that there was much nudity in the original, just one rather modest scene involving girl under a shower, but as an uninhibited sex romp it knew few rivals. Irreverent is the best word to describe it, and Irreverence has been rather hard to come by on TV series, if we except one or two variety shows. So how really pleasant it is to report that "MASH" turned up on Sunday night with the spirit of the original, if not all the blood and free-swinging language, intact. HAWKEYE PIERCE (Alan Alda), Trapper John Mclntyre (Wayne Rogers), Lt.

Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson), Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff), Hot Lips Houlihan (Loretta Swit), Spearchucker Jones (Timothy Brown), Lt. Dish (Karen Phillip) and all the rest of the mad company made the transition with ease. So did the catchy theme song, "Suicide Is Painless," and not a little of the irreverence, including those disconcerting throw-away lines between masked doctors and nurses discussing sex and seduction while "playing par surgery," in which "par is a live patient." The links in the chain of command are as loosely knit as ever, with a lieutenant challenging a colonel to a duel, "specimen bottles at 20 paces," and the byplay between male and female evidencing itself in exchanges such as: "You don't trust me?" She: "Not since the first time I found you hiding in my sleeping bag." Or: "A girl can only take so much." He: Are we anywhere near that point yet?" The major project underway In the opener was a raffle to raise $1,000 to send a Korean house boy to medical school in the States. The prize: a pass to Tokyo with a beautiful nurse, Lt.

Dish, of course. The winner: the Roman Catholic chaplain. Not bad for starters Not bad at all. "BANACEK," THE first of the a Mystery Movie" trio of detective series to debut this season, gave promise of interesting things to come, as George Peppard, in the title role, went about solving the riddle of a pro football player's disappearance. As the man seemed to have simply vanished from the bottom of a pile-up of players right before the eyes of thou sands of fans, the Polish insurance sleuth obviously had his work cut out for him.

A $1.5 million payment awaited the outcome of his efforts, to say nothing of his fee, based on what he could save the company involved. Q. I have three short questions and I hope you'll answer them. First, please let me know if Bob Denver is related to the singer John Denver? Also, is Lucille Ball going to play Auntie Mame in a new TV series? And, last, is James Franciscus going to come back in a TV series? G.B. A.

Bob Denver, who played Maynard in the old Dobie Gil-lis series and was last seen on "The Good Guys," is not 1 a to singer-composer John Denver. Lucille Ball will play the title role in the film version of the musical "Mame," which is based on "Auntie Mame" but there is no TV series planned. James Franciscus has no new series plans, but he will probably guest star on a few of the new shows. Q. I am very impressed with Susan Saint James who is Rock Hudson's wife in "McMillan and Wife." I read everything I come across with her name mentioned.

One of the things I read said that she became an actress almost by accident. What does this mean exactly? Mrs. J.K. A. The term "accidental" has no real meaning for us after reading Susan Saint James' studio biography.

Susan was a model for about three years and decided to take some acting classes just as a lark. After about two months of acting classes, she was spotted by a Universal Studios talent agent and given a small role in the made-for-TV feature, "Fame Is the Name of the Game," which was also a pilot film for a proposed series. The series sold and Susan went along with it. The rest is TV history. Susan won a Emmy for her performance as Peggy Maxwell in the series and has been working ever since.

Q. James Farentino is so nice in anything he plays.
