I'm curious lo know whether the Duke of Windsor rvrr had another important woman in his life besides Wallis? After all. he wasn't a boy when he married her. D. Chesapeake, Va.

A. British royalty was more sheltered in those days and to-bumper frustration. The city has already made a pedestrian island out of Piazza Navona and a few other squares but is yet unwilling to expand this Idea in a hurry for fear of further clogging nearby streets and squares. An elaborate subway network Is still far in the future with Romans content with a single line. Other lines are in planning stages where some have been for more than 10 years and will probably remain there for years.

Although considered the most efficient method of urban transportation, subways cause controversy in the Eternal City. When they dig, water comes up, raising fears that that the city is on water and may sink. Or, if there is no water, there are always ruins beneath, enough to stop drillings because the area becomes some sort of a national treasure. ROMP (AP) Another phase of Rome's experiment with free buses is over, leaving the bankrupt city more in debt and its tiny streets and big squares as clogged as ever. And, some say, that was Rome's final attempt to see if its "Operation Gratis" would induce Romans to part with their cars and take the bus.

Many didn't. The bus line says, however, that its riders increased about 10 per cent in the two months it offered free public transportation at peak commuting hours. But no one was claiming that traffic congestion in the historic heart of Roma declined correspondingly. Other experiments earlier in the year yielded similar results. Yesterday, with the city-supported bus line $2.5 million poorer, Rome embarked on another plan reduced fares.

Commuters can buy monthly ticket books for a single line for 1,000 lire or $1.70, twice that for two lines or triple for all lines. Individual fares will again be 50 lire 8 cents a ride. After a loss, the new plan is expected to bring in some cash to the city, whose debt stands at $2.5 billion and accrues $1.5 million a day. Transportation experts say Rome's traffic problem is far too complicated to be solved by free buses alone. They cite, for Instance, the staggering number of vehicles In and around Rome a million of them, about a car for every three Romans.

"Maybe the husband took the bus to work during the Gratis period," a bus driver said, "but then I wouldn't be surprised if his wife used the car all day. Where does that leave traffic?" A ban on cars in the center is seen by many as the only way to ease bumper- 1 as the Prince of Wales, Kd-ward kept his private life quiet. 0 w-ever, he was said to be very much in love with Lady Rosemary Leven- 0 Cower, the beautiful daughter of the Duke of I I i 7 lltlllllllUIIIIMIMIIIIII Illll tlltlllirilllllllltllllllllll IIIMIIIIIIIIIIIllllllllllllltl II IIIIIIIIIIMItllltllllllllllllMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMItllllllMtlllll -Associated Press Wlreohole O'Brien Gels Fischer Fails to Show, McGovcrn Escapes Chess Forfeit JlillUOrSCniCllt (Continued from Page 1) Thank You Pat Nixon kisses girl In Ukrainian folk costume who gave a bouquet of flowers to the First Lady at the opening of the Nixon Phones Mitchell, New Political Aide SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (A P) President Nixon worked yesterday on the strategy and tactics of his re-election effort and telephoned his just-resigned campaign manager, John Mitchell, to "express his understanding" of Mitchell's decision to quit full-time politics. Press secretary Ronald L.

In the interval the prince lavished attention on one of America's fabulous Morgan twins, Lady Thelma Furness (aunt of Gloria Vanderbilt Cooper).

It was Lady Thelma who asked her good pal, Wallis Simpson, to keep an eye on the King while she went on a trip. By the time Lady Thelma returned, Wallis had him snared. Incidentally, Lady Rosemary was killed in a plane crash at age 36 in 19.30. Q. What will happen to the surviving Japanese terrorist who helped kill all those people in the Tel Aviv airport? H.

Making Nixon 'Tough' Wilhins Slams em Party 'Fumbling' DETROIT (AP) Although accusing the Nixon Administration of being unfriendly toward blacks, Roy Wilkins of the NAACP said yesterday President Nixon will be tough to beat in the November election because of "fumbling" in the Democratic party. The Russian side reluctantly accepted Euwe's decision. Spassky was asked what he thought of the situation and the 35-year-old champion replied: "I came to play." At a late afternoon news conference where he announced the decision on the postponement, Euwe said: "I think there will be no play at all. That is my personal opinion." Euwe had said earlier that cancellation would be "a great loss in many respects for the Icelandic organizers who have a great investment at stake and for the game of chess itself." He said at the time that he "couldn't possibly support a convention that would sustain this kind of shabby, would not specuy wno in the Democratic party was guilty of fumbling. This way they've come up with some strong, fresh situations, Q. It seems to me that both Truman Capote and Norman Mailer have been working on new novels for ages. Is this all a From the ocean-front Western White House, Nixon also telephoned Clark MacGregor, the former Minnesota congressman named to succeed Mitchell at re-election headquarters, Ziegler said.

MacGregor has headed the White House congressional liason office for 18 months. ZIEGLER, WHO NOTED that Nixon and Mitchell had been close friends for years, said the President called him to discuss "personal things and to express his understanding" of his decision to resign. Details of the call to MacGregor weren't disclosed, but Nixon presumably reviewed campaign strategy with the new director. Less than an hour after dawn yesterday, aides said Nixon was up and taking a tour of the grounds of his Spanish-style home in an electric golf cart. Ziegler said Nixon also made morning telephone calls to Dr. Billy Graham, evangelist and presidential friend, and to his daughters, Julie Eisenhower and Trie i a Cox. BUT NOTING recent national convention credentials battles among Democrats and other intraparty fighting Wilkins said that this "fumbling" will make Nixon "a very tough man to beat." Wilkins also said, "in previous administrations, whether they were sincere or not, they always gave the impression that you (blacks) were part of the program for the nation. Now Mr. Nixon has given the impression that you are not a part of the program." Wilkins said he did not want to give the impression that he was more critical of the Nixon Administration than the facts warrant. But he added: "His (Nixon's) attitude on busing are adament and he has convinced black people that he is unfriendly." ASKED HOW the black community perceives the administration's coolness, Wilkins responded, "It's hard to say how do you label a trend." But, he added, "The mood in the black community today is anti-Nixon, anti-Nixon policies." Wilkins said the NAACP will not support any specific Democratic presidential contender. A.

You're right, they both really have been working off and on for a long time on serious works. Capote has been saying for three years now that he's two-thirds away from finishing his book, "An-sewerd Prayers," but friends and parties keep diverting him. Mailer also has been making serious noises for years, but currently is plan back-room dealing. I wouldn't have any part of any convention nominee who would support this." But yesterday McGovern refused to use language quite so threatening, saying 'I would be inclined to support the nominee if he is selected by an honorable legal process according to the rules of our party. "I don't think there's going to be any third party.

I never have." But McGovern would not rule out his own walkout or third-party move If the Credentials Committee were upheld by the full convention and he were to lose the nomination as a result. "That's too iffy a question," he said at one point. The helicopters are parked at Opa-Locka Airport in Miami, a civilian field used for private and commercial aviation.
