The Pittsburgh district, in this instance, covers the four counties of Allegheny, Denver, wasning-ton and Westmoreland. The Employment Upturn One major item in the survey employment shows the number of jobs substantially higher than in 1939, but down from the peak of wartime 1943. That industrial employment curve has resulted in a rise of 41.5 per cent in the number of workers during the 10-year period. Mine employment was down, as the one exception to the rule, and better than average gains were shown in chemicals and miscellaneous, the latter being a desir able classification in the aim to ward diversification. Another source of gratification is the 1948 rise in the number of industrial establishments. This total for four counties was 3.134 at the close of last year, but the 10-year rise from 2,500 was not steady, particularly in Alle- .mr .-v.vifl u. Wage Payments Triple A tripling of wages and sal aries paid by industry 1n the four I counties to 1.3 billions is one of the basic statistics from 1939 through 1948. Wage earners, up 37 per cent, received 210 per cent more dollars; salaried workers, up 71 per cent, were paid 191 per cent more money. The value of products, which hit a wartime peak of $4 billion and fell to less than $3 billion in 1316, skyrocketed to an all-time high of $4.7 billion hi 1948, or roughly three times that of 1939. Of significance, too, is the value added by manufacture, that meas ure of processing and diversifica tion obtained by computing the difference between costs of raw materials and finished product. This was $1,200,090,000 in 1946; $1.7 billion in 1947 and $1.9 billion in 1948, a pattern essentially the same as value of products. The total capital investment in the designated area was $1.8 billion at the end of 1948, com pared with $1.4 billion in 1939. The number of industrial employes reached 401,957 last year, compared with 401,655 in 1947 and 284,148 in 1939. The 194S di-i vision among counties was Alle gheny 2d9,130, Beaver 48,037, Washington 38,170 and West moreland 56,620. Metals led in the classification in all counties with the exception of Washing ton where mines topped it. Met als and metal industries employed 6d per cent of the total industrial workers in the four counties in 1948. , ' 1D.11 1 1. 1 Am Car&Fdy 3g 9 22 22 22 Ar.iCho,Cablel.60a 6 24 23 24;., ' Am Chicle 2a 5 A'i AmrolriYDe 1.20a 3 18 18H 18 TEN MOST ACTIVE STOCKS Sales Close N. Nov. 29 W Stock traders stepped warily in today's market and prices scarcely stirred. The market tripped at the out set when fractional losses were posted for a wide variety of lead ing issues. Supply and demand reached a quick balance, how-j ever, and further declines were blocked. t ' There was no serious attempt at a comeback and final prices showed losses in a majority. Dividend news supplied the leverage lor comparatively wide swings in several issues. Occasional flurries of activity helped to lift the day's business to 1,310,000 shares from 1,080,000 yesterday, which was the small est in nearly two months. John L. Lewis' plans for his coal miners appeared to ' cause traders more concern than any thing else. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks dipped .1 of one point to 67.8. A rise in the rail' group was more than offset by a decline in industrials. Utilities! were unchanged on average. ' Chesapeake & Ohio common, closed lower at a new low for the year. Directors of Allied Chemical voted a special dividend of 54 a share and the stock promptly dropped to a closing loss of 4. The board of American Can voted an extra disbursement of $1 a share, but the stock dipped U. U. S. Treasury WASHINGTON.
