The show ends its run at the Oakland arena on Saturday. JTeev JFilm Peggy Cummins And John Dall Are At Barry in 'dm Crazy' By HAROLD V.

COHEN The ways of crime and the complexes of its practitioners hold a strange fascination for the King Brothers, and well they should. The gentlemen only made a fortune out of their movie about the late and certainly un-lamented John Dillinger, so the warm spot in the family's corporate heart for enemies of the public is quite natural. There can be no other reason for "Gun Crazy." Its contents are tawdry and its legends oft-told. Although some of the glosses are rather skillful and Mr. John Dall's performance has a grain of hungering pity, the picture barely adds up to another vest-pocket edition of True Detective Stories.

Poor Mr. Dall's one failing here until he meets up with Miss Peggy Cummins is a burning affection for guns. He loves anything that shoots, and has spent a stretch in reform school for stealing a pistol. "Gun Crazy" makes it clear, however, that he has none of the homicidal tendencies which usually accompany such a mania. But once Miss Cummins, a sideshow Annie Oakley, gets her hands on him, and longingly expounds her practical theories, the two of them become the scourge of highway and town, leaving in their wake a string of empty cash-drawers.

Since Miss Cummins' regard for human life is less idealistic than Mr. Dall's, she sends a couple of her victims to the coroner, and from then on, it's merely a matter of time until the cinema's code catches up with them. "Gun Crazy" arranges a very artistic exit for the doomed couple, by the way, with low hanging mists on the mountain tons, dawn streaking through the ckv and even a choir on the soundtrack. i "Gun Crazy" has its share of the normal excitements that accrue from hold-up, chase and escape, but the whole design of the picture is bankrupt from use and exploitation. There are some questions, too.

Although Mr. Dall seems to go in at least a partial straight line, the character Miss Cummins plays keeps swimming in circles. One moment she is a cold and calculating female lead ing Mr. Dall on, the next a devoted wife who simply can't stand the thought of being away from his side. It isn't easy to straighten out Miss Cummins, and she does nothing personally to clarify the situation.

Nor does Mr. Dall himself always suggest the hopeless infatuation he's supposed to have to account for his easy acquies-fitoce. gut then why try to fathom something so ostensibly contrived out of standard violences and patent medicines? The real disservice of pictures like "Gun Crazy" is that they actually work up a sympathy of sorts for its criminals. Crime may not pay, brjt there's no need to make the non-payment so temporarily As A- I'- Jl 1, -x ft Vf 1 V5! if of at His a Grand Old Vaudeville Name GUS VAN Still singing songs just as he did more than a quarter of a century ago as. half of the celebrated team of Van and Schenck, Mr.
