membership of 850 persons and during ninety years it has been the source frotn which have sprung from eight to ten flourishing religious organizations The Rev Haines is pastor and to morrow morning he will preach on Ninetieth He said that the service will be very informal oto ac count of warm weather Members of the congregation which is numbered among the most active in the city already are looking forward to a time ten years dis tant when theycan celebrate in a larger way the hundredth anniversary of the founding It is expected that all the religious organizations in the citywill participate in the exercises When an Indianapolis Presbyterian speaks of irst he means of course the irst Presbyterian Church It would designate the same church for it was the first church Indianapolis ever had The Methodists with what is now Meridian Street Church were a close second in the wilderness But the Pres byterians were first It was two years after the town of In dianapolis was that the irst Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis saw its beginning with the preaching of a ser mon in a grove just south of where the State House stands by the Rev Ludwell Gaines a missionary from Ohio That was on Aug 21 1821 The service was held in the shade of a great walnut tree and included singing as well as preaching Early in 1822 tho rv navM Prrr ur was sent here by the Connecticut Mis sionary Society He preached several ser mons and was liked so well that steps were taken to retain him regularly An arrangement was made to have him re turn in the tall of that year to take charge of the congregation as its pastor to devote half his time to the work And In the meantime the Rev Isaac Reed a man who is said to have been possessed of much zeal and comparatively little ability preached a number of times PROCTOR LACKED ZEAL In due time the Revr Mr Proctor ar rived and took up his new church work Now if the Rev Mr Reed had zeal and lacked ability the Rev Air Proctor ac cording to one church historian had ability and lacked zeal and so at the end of a year's engagement he was allowed to go his way He had been engaged to give three fourths instead of half of his time to the Indianapolis church however and the contract stated that he waslo have for his services the sum of $400 a year so much of it as could be col Despite shortcomings these early preachers may have had a sub scription for a church" building was started and in May 1823 the congrega tion undertook the expenditure of $1200which had been subscribed by undertak Ing the erection of a church on North Pennsylvania street above Market street (at about 120 North Pennsylvania street) This building was nearly enough com pleted in July of the same year to make possible the holding of the first service there The building committee for the church Coe James Blake and (father of Simon and known to the present this committee was not gregatlon wa decided without conten tion Daniel Yandes and Samuel Merrill were appointed by the members of the new church and Dr Coe and James Ray by the old congregation to adjust the I financial affairs of the church and the property was divided In an equitable way rom that day until the present and even during the lime before the reunion of 1869 the two churches dwelt in harmony and worked to the same common purpose In the community Early in 1S40 the Rev Samuel ulton was called to the church but he did not believe that he could accept the charge on account of ill health and in the same year the Rev Phineas Gurley newly graduated from the Princeton Theologi cal Seminary was called He continued in the service for nine years then went to the irst Presbyterian Church at Dav ton In the first year of this young service the church sought a new location ana a new ounuing as a result una structure at Marfcet Monument Place where the Central Life Building Is now situated was chosen The old church property lot and all was sold for $250 cash The corner stone of the new building was laid in October 1841 and the church was dedicated in May 1843 OTHER MINISTERS CALLED The Rev Charles Mills then at the head of the emale Seminary of the town served as pastor for about a year after the Rev Mr Gurley resigned and in the fall of 1851 the Rev John A Mc Clung was called as pastor serving for four years It 'was in 1851 also that this mother of Presbyterian churches of Indianapolis sent forth her second branch the thirdresbyterlam Church All told forty one members went from the old to the new church twenty one leaving to organize It and the other twenty leaving later Some time elapsed after this nastor left the church before a regular pastor the elders who have served are Dr Isaac installed though several calls were 1 Coe Caleb Scudder Ebenezer Sharpe issued and the pulpit was filled regularly James Blake James Ray Governor with supplies In 1856 the Rev Thomas Samuel Bigger and many others Cunningham accepted the pastorship Another notable character in the his He served for about three years and was i tory of the church was James Greene followed by the Rev Hotvard Nixon who was for more than thirty years the ww was a very popular pastor It was clerk committee found that the church would cost $1600 and not $1200 but Nicholas McCarty the only merchant in the town was willing to give the struggling church credit and this he did And it was through his gener that the church was completed BUILDING IS ERECTED An odd and interesting feature of the organization of this church was the fact that the building was erected and ready for services before the church organiza tion had formally been effected The little congregation had met regularly had continued faithfully toward the meeting of its financial obligations and yet the viiuicii nau not uecn organized uune ju isz3 meetings fiad been held In Caleb Scud cabinet shop When the Rev Mr time was Up the congregation wanted a change and after some time the Rev George Bush of Morristown was invited to visit the church He arrivec? July 9 1824 and was so well liked that two months later he was without a dissent ing vote tailed to the pastoral charge at a salary of $400 a year So well and generally liked at first and so capable the Rev Mr Bush was to the little congregation a man of great prom ise but the joy of tlie congregation at his coming was short lived for in 1827 and 1828 he frequently delivered public ut terances against the form of government of the Presbyterian Church and it came to light that he had previously expressed doubts as to Scriptural warrants for the system The elders remonstrated him in vain About this time he East on missionary business and before he left addressed a long communication to the church officers setting forth his views During his absence there an extended correspondence on the sub ject of his beliefs and Dr Coe then an elder in the church later said that plan thus embodied was not like any sys tem on PASTOR IS DEIANT He returned in October 1828 and the church officers brought about a dissolu tion of his pastoral relation The preach er appealed the case and lost then con unuea House himself church his Court House meetings wearied of it and in March 1829 he returned to the East The next pastor of the church was the Rev John Moreland a diamond in the rough He was not in his early life blessed with the opportunities for learn ing which came to the ministers of the church even in those days not having Jearrred to read until he was IS years old But he had spent several years on a flat boat on the Mississippi and other rivers of the West and he had a rugged elo quence marked him as a very ef ficient pastor It was through his zeal action either keep AMERICAN PAINLESS DENTISTS 31 NOHTII PENNSYLVANIA HTItKT Opposite When Store 7 nvvw If Jjf 'i I I i Hi Ill II li i BV'i' 7 1 jfM 11 Todavj7 i wHHfap i ctwwmbIW I "iw iULx WK I wWffwiiff lEar The were after the name ther proud of huw their Imys A blackbird onu of a Huck ed over Bic field was the A hiuh Hv grazed the Wr A MiIlwiiMLirto i in ST Jt'Vei al i ii fmm i I 1 'jf body Several times when the playeis were tired the ball was lost and the'eii tiro membership of IEW Wi 2Trf LN LL jJ "'CL i tti'MWA'' jjf rgg 1 ItsHIlwHlSHSUHiWvEwWSwwi aJWk MKwKxNSteiaf aIPw's JltL'vl 1 1V various 12 to in Ix It triHI mtiy Bi cml lOO ynn) nice iovh 4 Jlkf All rtnds llllnn at Co Jb yearn old or more Louis Bieler Ural 'Bwiidl' Our tru irnntee in writing and Jialc Soahr second: lift varl sirlnt ttitr unnti In writing )i ten vi rs or 1 1 1 1 £ri st 1 1 I vp'i ru 1 hi 1 1 1 1 1 1 i 1 1 1 10 rates iirieii raigan seconu uriy vard in oe hu rgei I nice larenco Gale and hndenek Monihan first ami Robert 544) Moninan and otto Keller second 220 Kunv firsl and Dale jialir second po into race iJ ick Alomhan first ami ts jSEaLisEag Gmieem second tat race IT Hui ilermei ger first and 1 Har lam lilt yard dash for boys Lgzif less laan 12 years old I' seend JlilVdlU 16 years old I llixtd ero tn lb I ol hnin second Imp skip and jump 12 to 16 years od Iteelo first jit second: baseimll tnrowini' con test Allan Maxwell Hist and Kenneth Barr secund wmwirrrnniuMM nm niW fl he JH IZOS Consisted Of Ush orders for merclia ndlso worth from $2 The dav's festivities eh: ZlRHiuBk uHiwUiirim toSMMLg raniBMrg (a SO to" I Helen Cox from the home obtaining her IWWIIIl 1 1 tutu A' i fl a.
