TULSA DAILY WORLD, MONDAY, JUNE 4, 1962 Bus 'Lines' By 08 0 6 007 T. R. RYDER 0 0 0 0 0 8T We hate to argue with an astronaut, but since he flunked heat transfer we figure he's not infallible. We refer to LCDR Carpenter's comment that three orbits around the earth is "as easy as a bus ride." Why, shuckin's, everyone knows there is nothing as pleasant as a bus ride. For one thing, in orbit you have no friendly companions to chat with.

The nearest one is 100 miles away down. And what about "getting In a capsule you're liable to get off 200 miles from where you planned. On an Transit bus you get off right where you're supposed to. And air conditioning system works better than the capsule's, too. The manager of the Orpheum theater downtown HAD to have his tongue in his cheek when he put this sign up on the marquee: THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE NEARLY A NASTY ACCIDENT Nearly? We're becoming baseball fans at our house, though it's a little late in life to start.

We'd like some information. What does it mean when the Albuquerque catcher stands up, raises his arm and holds his index finger straight up, and then the center fielder waves back to him? Is this a baseball signal or is the catcher telling his buddy that they'll meet for one short beer after the game? Coincidence or sarcasm? The day the market slumped (we'd say but it gives our broker friends the jitters) the organist at the Oiler ballpark chose as one of his selections "Happy Days Are Here For the younger set, we'd best explain that this was Roosevelt's and we'd also better explain that we mean Franklin and not Theodore theme song during the days of the depression. DID YOU KNOW? You aren't the only one who carries a tax burden. Transit Lines ALREADY pays nearly $100,000 a year in various federal, state and local taxes and that's without the additional gross receipts tax. Actually, it's you bus riders who pay this and all other taxes levied against the bus company.

Roll out the welcome mat this week for the nearly 1,000 members of the National Assn. of Retired Civil Service Employees who are meeting at the Mayo Hotel, and likewise to the members of the Oklahoma Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy meeting tomorrow through Thursday at the Hotel Tulsa. Mark your calendar for June 26. It's an important date for all bus riders. Note to Mommas: It's swimmin' time again, and here's a reminder that has bus routes to all the public pools.

Call LU 4-6421 for information about the best way to get the youngsters to the swimming hole. Speaking of taxes, did you realize that you pay the following indirect taxes to the federal government-taxes levied against the manufacturer and passed on to you? Playing cards, 13 cents per pack; beer excise tax, $9.00 per barrel; distilled spirits, $10.50 per gallon; cigars, up to $20 per thousand; snuff, 10 cents per pound; musical instruments, 10 per cent; fishing rods, 10 per cent. They've made it pretty expensize to have any fun, haven't they? Bet you didn't know that the land area now comprising Oklahoma has had a total of 14 flags flying over it. The first was the Royal Standard of Spain, brought to Oklahoma in 1541. It was followed by the English flag in 1663; the French flag in 1682; the Spanish flag again in 1763; the French again in 1800.

We didn't live under a United States flag until the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Since then there have been several other Indian, Confederate and state flags. And we almost forgot. Part of the state was under Texas rule for a spell. This part of the state did not include the site of Owen Field at Norman.

She was Joan (Toni) Wein, who had recently moved to New York to work, first at an art gallery and later for a book publisher. She took a special vacation to make the trip to Europe with the Atlanta Art Association with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Wein. The parents also were killed in the crash.

Wein, whose brother, Lawrence, was in the group that bought the famed New York skyline landmark, was to buy some paintings for Brandeis University during the tour. Tulsa church to be purchased by another congregation Colorful Dixie Court Clerk Among Dead ATLANTA, June 3 (-Georgia lost one of her most colorful state officials, Supreme Court Clerk Katherine Bleckley, in Sunday's tragic air crash at Paris. Miss Bleckley had been clerk of the state's highest court for more than 27 years. She got the clerk's job on Dec. 8, 1934, following in the steps of her father who was clerk of the state Court of Appeals.

Her rich family heritage included a grandfather, Logan E. Bleckley, chief justice of the State Supreme Court; her other grandfather was Alexander McGhee Wallace, a lieutenant colonel of the Confederate infantry. Even Miss Bleckley's abbreviated biography in the official state directory omitted her birthdate and her age remains the secret of her surviving relatives. AIR FRANCE TRIES TO AID MOURNERS ATLANTA, June 3 (-Air France's office was jammed Sunday with shocked and grieving relatives hopefully seeking some word of loved ones aboard the jet that crashed at Paris, France. While a French-accented hostess notified next-of-kin, Air France dispatched four executives from its New York office to assist in any way possible the families of the more than 100 victims.

The air line's Atlanta district manager, 42-y a r-old Paul S. Doassans, was killed in the flaming crash. Doassans had flown to Paris three days age to supervise the return flight for the Atlanta Art Association group that died in the tragedy. Afton Rites Today For Hugh D. Homes Narrowly Missed By Jet's Flaming Fuel VILLENEUVE LE ROI, France, gallons of jet fuel aboard the Air killing 129 persons, left a blackened than 200 yards long.

Had the plane veered a few yards to the left, or hit the ground a second or two later, it would have smashed into rows of neat little stucco houses where French families were eating lunch. "Twenty yards farther north and it would have smashed two rows of said one resident. "We had nine people in our house sitting down to lunch." "An explosion and flames nothing but fire everywhere," he said. "It just skidded right past our home billowing flames and smoke. We could not go near." June 3 thousands of France plane that crashed Sunday, path 50 yards wide and more Another house occupied by an elderly couple narrowly escaped heavy damage.

The burning cockpit smashed into the front yard, and flaming fuel briefly covered the stucco wall and tile roof. A piece of the plane's insulation still dangled from the chimney. The side of the house was scarred by flying debris, and in the back yard garden lay the only unburned debris of the wreckthe contents of the galley and a few smashed suitcases. IT'S NOT TOO LATE! Oklahoma School of Accountancy 9th and. Cincinnati Phone LU 2-9111 JET CRASH Continued from Page One intense green trees smoked and burned. Startled residents of Villeneuve Le Roi heard the dull boom of the explosion as the fuel tanks went up. Some huddled fearfully in their gray stone houses, aware that tragedy had occurred but too fearful to go out. Houses Missed The Air France charter plane, running wild and yawing as it ripped through fences and gouged into the hill, just missed the small concentration of houses a short distance from the runway's end.

One elderly resident, Mrs. Robert Metternich, was in the having lunch with her husband when they heard the booming explosion. "Flames flew up all around Mrs. Metternich said. "Fire flew side of the house.

I ran out the back door but had to get back in immediately because of the flames." Her legs were slightly scorched. The burning fuel quickly went out, however, and the little stucco house was saved. Help Rushes In Within moments after the plane had pulled free from the runway, only to slam back again and head for disaster, fire fighting units from Orly were headed toward the scene. As the news spread, fire units from nearby towns sped to the scene. Police from Orly cordoned off the area as both police firemen vainly tried to reach those in the burning aircraft.

One wing tilted upward toward the sky, smoke trailing from it. Virtually the entire control cabin was wrenched off the nose of the plane and lay to one side, burning fiercely. The tail of the plane was torn off in the plunge into the trees, and this saved the lives of the two young hostesses. They were thrown clear and escaped the fire which swept through the fuselage. Steward Dies Later Some time later a steward, Marcel Lugon, was pulled alive from the wreckage.

He died of burns late Sunday night. foam against burning fuel, Firemen used, water and firebut it flared so fiercely those inside must have perished almost at once. The fire was fed by thousands of gallons of fuel the plane had taken on in preparation for the flight to Atlanta, via New York. A haze of black smoke hung over the wreckage and drifted above the cluster of homes of the village. Ambulances choked the narrow streets.

All private flying in the region was forbidden. Police and firemen began the somber task of removing the charred bodies of the dead as the remnants of the fire were put out. Only Ruins Remain wreckage. Investigation Due Air France officials readied an investigation into the causes of the crash. Only a wisp of smoke rose from blackened mass that once was the proud "Chateau De Sully" liner of Air France-named a minister of King Henry IV.

Orly Airport officials were grim and saddened by the tragedy. Only one other air disaster had taken a greater toll. That was the collision of two airliners over New York City Dec. 16, 1960 that killed 134 persons. Bodies were put into ambulances and taken to Paris mortuaries along a highway busy with Sunday holiday traffic.

Scores of police stood guard in a wide perimeter around the crash site, but roads were crowded with the curious, anxious to see the The first man to reach the scene was the gendarme who watched the plane as it raced down the runway. He declined to be identified by name, but said as soon as the aircraft slammed back down after its momentary rise he began running toward When he reached it the flames drove him back and he was unable to get close to the fuselage He dragged two suitcases back from the fire, then watched helplessly as the fire roared through the wreckage. Air France officials were at a loss as to what might have happened to the plane. Witnesses said it rolled down the runway at the normal high speed of jet aircraft takeoffs, barely lifted, then suddenly dropped back and continued to roll swiftly along out of control. Wreckage which was strewn along the runway seemed to have been torn from the engines and wings as the plane smashed the metal stands of marker lights and ripped through the runway fence.

CRASH WIPED OUT GEORGIA FAMILY ATLANTA, June 3 (UPI) -A measure of the tragedy which struck this city Sunday can be taken with a study of the Fred Bull family which was wiped out by the Air France jetliner crash in Paris. Fred Bull; his wife, Elizabeth, and their two daughters, Ellen, 10, and Betsy, 16, died in the crash as did Bull's mother, Mrs. Mary Bull, and his uncle, Robert Newcomb. Bull worked with Newcomb in the engineering firm of Newcomb and Boyd. In addition to his membership in the art association he was an active member of the Northside Kiwanis Club, the exclusive University Capitol Yacht City Club, Club.

According to police reports, Brannon made a U-turn on East Apache Blvd.

Bethel Temple Will Buy Property of Lutherans Purchase of Bethany Lutheran city's most unusual -by Bethel proved Sunday night at a meeting The Rev. Taylor Davis, Bethel Temple pastor, said the transaction, financial details of which were not revealed, will be consumated within few days. The purchase includes the original Bethany Lutheran building, a two-story structure, which the Bethel Temple congregation expects to use, as Bethany members have, for an educational unit. The Bethel congregation probably will begin to hold services in the new building July 15, said Davis.

The two congregations have agreed to share the building for six months, to enable the Bethany congregation to complete arrangements for a new church home. The plan calls fort the Lutheran congregation to have worship service at 8:30 a.m. and church school an hour later. The Bethel Temple congregation will have morning worship at 11 a.m. with church school for lower age groups.

At a 6 p.m. "Vesper Hour," training school will be offered for Bethel Temple adults, simultaneously, the with a children's service regular youth program. The Bethel congregation's regular evangelistic hour will be at 7 p.m. The Lutheran congregation does not normally conduct evening worship. Designed by A.

Blaine Imel, the church attracted much attention following completion three years ago because of its unusual shape. Many observers thought it resembled a tepee, since the major part of the side-walls is below and only the slanting roof is visible. The Bethany congregation, which has outgrown its first church building, expects to expand under a new mission plan for their denomination, the American Lutheran Church. Other reasons for the decision to relocate, cited by Rev. G.

E. Gotoski, pastor, are that the congregation has grown away from LET'S GO CAMPING! As the final bell marks the end of another school year, families all over America are saying, "Let's go camping!" This year a record number of folks will pile sleeping bags and cooking pots in the family car for a vacation under canvas in our woods and open spaces. If you're lucky enough to find a spot in a regular campground, ordinary precautions with fires will do. But thousands of families will have to set up camp in undeveloped areas. If you are one of these families, SMOKEY asks you to follow these rules to prevent forest fires: 1.

Locate your fireplace in a circle of bare earth. Build up rocks or dig a shallow hole to enclose your fire. 2. Keep your fire small--and put it dead out when you leave. 3.

Fill campstoves and lanterns in an area cleared to bare earth. 4. Soak used charcoal with water and bury in cool damp earth. 5. Sit down to smoke clear a place for hot ashes, matches, and cigarette stubs.

Size of the congregation precluded having even a fellowship dinner in the present facilities, Pastor Gotoski said. The Bethel Temple congregation will be the first of Tulsa's downtown churches to move to the suburbs. In most large cities, many downtown congregations have relocated as their members bought homes in outlying areas.
