INDUSTRIAL ALCOHOL Vith the advent of the September meeting of the board of the Vnited States Industrial Alcohol Company rumors that the common sfHrk will he placed npon a dividend basis are once more playing their part in market operations. Kara quarterly meeting ha been preceded, hy a host of rumors and a consequent stiffenins; in the price of the, common atock, only to meet with the more: or less usual tanirancement. "no action on tbe common." While the reports appear a trifle more confident at this particular time well informed circles are of the opinion that common dividends most wait npon tbe working nut of a satisfactory plan for the reoriraiiiEation of the capital structure of the company. REMINGTON'S KARNINGS IMPROVING. Remintrton Typewriter waa a feature of the industrial specialties.

Well-mfonned Interests expect Remington, which earned $6.54 a share on the common for tbe tirst six months to show better than $15 a share for the year. Company has been building up handsome reserves during he last two years snd while paying off back accumiilatnins en the nrererrvd shares and is in very strone financial position sgain. The last of the accumulation should be declared payable at directors uieei-iiiE in September, paving the way for resumption on the common stock in Hecember. Remington" foreign sales have iuiTeased greatly during the last few mouths and now domestic sales are beginning to improve MACK TRICKS. Msny of those who have been following fack "Trucks and who have benefitted from the spectacular sdvanee of the stock In recect months are voicing the opinion that Mack will develop in'o a second Nash Motor.

It is undoubtedly trne that Mack la on tbe threshold one of the most substantial growths ever enjoyed by a motor vehicle manufacturer in either the pasaenger car or commercial ehiie field. Tbe rapidly increasing demand for Mack passe user busses is expected by. ofhcials to double the company's sales volume and earning prwer within a few years and that wili be by rt means the end of Mack's possibilities. Tbe hitherto little heard of rail csr is likely to develop into another large money maker. NORTHWESTERS RAILS.

The advance in the stocks of the railroads of the Northwest, under the leadership of Great Northern, is regarded as one of the most significant movements In the entire market. With thte latter selling at about 7o. the street la beginning to think that something better than per ent a year will be coming to the stockholders before long. For this year to date the groas earnings on the Great Northern are over better than fivr the same period of last year, and there is an increase of the net or over northern Pacific and (Hiicaen and Northwestern earnings are showing satisfactory gains also. The question is being raised whether if the western roads were to get an advance of 5 per cent in freight rates, ail three of these companies would not lie able to add at least 1 per cent a year to their present dividend which is 5 per cent on both Great Northern snd Northern Pscitic and 4 per cent on Chicago at Northern Western.

The advance in preferred can reasonably he explained by the fact that iis position as a per cent dividend payer is soundly fortincd by heavy eamincs but the held of active market operations in the abah issues has now beeu triiferreri to the common stock. The specialties continue to offer ex-'elicnt trading' opportunities. John Muir While conservation is decidedly ad visable at present stock market prices, we do not look for any irnmedinu change in fundamentals. We favor rails, food stocks, coppers and oils. Kcnner Beane. We think that stock will continue to be active, with sharp upward movements in specialties', but it will be woil to take ad vantage of advances to secure profits on outstanding commitments.

Paine, Webber o. Conservative traders who think the trend is still upward will, we believe, be much safer and have a greater chance of profiting from a further rise by hold-ins; the rails than by holding a broad list of the average industrials. Goodbody A fo. AH these elements make for larger business as well as for rather more profit able results and they have not been lost upon the comiaunKy. Henry lews o.

At the present writing; we do pot see any convincing frign of the bevlririlriS of a bear market. Hartshorne, rales Co. coxsrMPTiox or oi cotton. Although the very large eonsnmption of cotton during the crop year which ended last month hart been made abundantly plain by tb weekly snd monthly statements during the period', the total figures in the Oivern-menfs eonsnmption report last Friday made consblernblo Impression. This was particu larly true in the matter of exports, whirh were shown to have exceeded very largely the foreign takings ef any season since that which 'ended ith July.

Yet the export in that first year of the war was not at the time talked of as anything remarkable. It as. in fact, smaller than in any of the three years preceding, our cotton exports for the season ending with July. 1012, having been lfl.ioj.009 1 tales, whereas they were in the season ending with July, 1915. The fact that even the past season's cotton exports of 8.1r,,Ptt bales, although greater than in tbe preceding season, were, nevertheless, fsr below tbe maximum shipment of in the cotton season V.ill-12, caused a gMd deal of discussion as to the poswihiiities of the future.

There was a rather general feeling that Continental Europe is still precluded from its full pre-war consumption of cotton because of economic conditions and that the longer future may mark a striking change in this regard. The only trsders who seem to be worrying over the aflfsirs of tbe American Locomotive Company are the abort. People who have been following tbe course of the locomotive industry know tbls branch of bnsiness is erratic. This is because of spssmodic buying by the railroads. But the latter have bi have locomotives, so many on the average, every year. When they buy they buy heavily, and the locomotive companies are able to make up for poor business in periods of depression.

With car loadings at a record, the conclusion to be drawn is that buying will set in soon after a lapse of eight months or more. Thia year la likely to tie-a poor year for the locomotive companies, wnlle 1926 is likely to 1 a big year. Tbe statements of earnings of the American Locomotive Company over the last five years give one an idea of (lie erratic course of the industry.
