Surely, they will come to no good end. when a slip of a girl can write a movement tor string-quartet, and a lifted lad can roll off a sequence of diminished sevenths. Think of a boy having the ability to write a "Cradle Hong" for French Horn, so that thins actually lias quality, and then some slight girl's writing: a trio for treble voices that sounds as if it might have been done by a veteran writer.

That is a real work that 'is being done; children are taught how to think a theme and then told how to handle their tools. There is little ambiguous writing and precious little arty meandering. Harmony is not thought of so much um-pa but a grouping of notes so that the harmonization means something. As to the singing that always holds one's attention. Will Earhart sees to it that children never force a tone and that they seldom sing out of register.

If a boy is pre-adolescent then he sings treble and if he is just going through the age of puberty then he sings notes w'thln his register. Tone is never sacrificed for a mere blat of fortissimo and that is something that choral conductors should remember. Of the many works presented by the chorus the most ambitious was Richard Kountz "Abraham Lincoln." In this work, long as it was. it seemed to us that Mr. Kountz had something real to say.

It fitted the voices and it surely fitted the text. Next to the cantata the most enjoyable the Franz "For Music."
