Not very two state senators say If you want to influence the Nebraska Legislature the best way is to know how the Legislature operates Sen Richard Marvel of Hastings said the organization of the the NU Young Republicans said the easiest way to meet legislators is through political parties Although the Legislature is nonpartisan al most all members are fairly active in a party she said Miss Shattuck a former legislative page urged students to study a particular bill thoroughly and then to talk to or write their senator about it easiest way to do it is to find a bill he has she said Good sources of information include the clerk of the office and Secretary of State rank office she said Marsh is a very helpful Miss Shattuck said office handles everything from election laws to branding laws and he al ways has ideas for things he wants She also urged students to meet Nebraskans like Mrs Calista Cooper Hughes director of the Office of Comprehensive Health Planning knows going on and can explain ollow News Miss Shattuck a former Hastings High School and NU debater urged high school students to get active in debate to study issues and to take part in model student congresses Students also should follow news of the Legislature and keep track of what bills are being discussed she said Students even may ask their senators to introduce bills for them she said Miss Shattuck Theisen of Norfolk first vice president of the NU student body in working for a larger NU budget Miss Theisen is another former legislative page In addition to lobbying many youths get in volved in state and local elections An example of this type of activism occurred in the 1969 Lincoln City Council election when Ron Pfeifer 23 of Lincoln organized "Youth for to help elect Harry Peterson Peterson a former Lincoln policeman is the first Negro city councilman in history Pfiefersaid that about 80 students about half of them high schoolers participated They conducted a telephone campaign distributed handbills and were in charge of put ting up yard signs he said It was the first time an organized group of youths participated actively in a Lincoln municipal election he said The campaign work of Teenage Republicans Young Republicans and Young Democrats are other examples of youthful political activism Miss Shattuck said Miss Junior Achiever Got Title but Not Boy Leslie Marchcllo was looking for a boyfriend when she joined Junior Achievement She was attending an all girl school she said and thought A might be one way to meet boys After two years in A the Mercy High School graduate admitted to failure: No Junior Achiever asked her for a date Leslie 18 laughed when she told her story She had just returned from the National Junior Achievement Conference in Bloomington Ind where she had been named national Miss Junior Achiever Leslie find dates through Junior Achievement fri I3KL Wv iS' i Leslie Seller but found she had a knack for selling everything from Easter baskets to advertisements Quite During her first year in Junior Achievement Leslie was treasurer of We Co sponsored by Western Electric Although the company had a bad year quite go Leslie was selected the lop Junior Achievement salesman in Omaha The winner was selected by several judges who watched Junior Achievers give their sales pitches Leslie demonstrated how she went about selling an Easter basket to a woman think they picked me be cause I talked a lot and also asked the woman for her opi nion always good when you ask the most Leslie noted not letting the customer say Leslie brought that philosophy into her second year in Junior Achievement She was president this year of AD Co sponsored by Peter Kiewit Co 2 Scholarships AD Co put out an advertising journal and was so successful in making money that the com pany donated two $500 scholar ships to Junior Achievement AD Co won the financial suc cess award and the award for the best annual report And Leslie ended up as candidate for Miss Junior Achiever At the national conference in August she com peted against 83 other girls from the United States and Canada An Essay As a candidate for the title Leslie wrote an essay about Junior Achievement She also was interviewed by a number of judges and as one of the five finalists was asked questions on current events The daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Marchello of 6 3 3 0 Woolworth Avenue Leslie will attend the University of Nebraska in Lincoln this fall She has not decided on a major but said she will concentrate on psychology sociology and political science her first two years Would she like to go into business? I Leslie said still very undecided about a Disc een Captain Beefheart Album Is Not for Weak Listener Very likely the weirdest rock iazz album ever issued is Mask (Straight STS 1053) by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band The group makes the Mothers of Invention sound mainstream Oddly the two record album becomes quite listenable after the initial shock It is not however for the weak listener Often the music is a collage of abstract instrumental sound and free rhythm At other times it is close to rock yet free of the strictures of the backbeat The lyrics are strange yet oddly seemingly a mixture of reality and fantasy Leader Beefheart is the chief vocalist and plays tenor and soprano saxes bass clarinet musette and simran horn On a pair of tracks he plays two horns simultaneously Others in the group are Zoot Horn Rollo guitar flute An tennae Jimmy Semens guitar Mascara Snake bass clarinet vocals and Rockette Morton bass The drummer is not listed but undoubtedly several mem bers of the combo alternate in that chair Thelma Houston (Dunhill DS 50054) is the excellent debut album of singer Thelma Houston Though a highly personal performer Miss Houston may remind many listeners of Dionne Warwick There is strength and body to her voice and she knows how to sell a song Composer Jim Webb wrote all Seeking Teen Writers Would you like to be a correspondent for Youth in the Midlands? KVras1 wJ L'H i "A Bonnie and Don Abstract sculptures A I I I A World Herald Photos by Robert Paskach Bill left Jack Work brings appreciation By Ellen Carlsen Joslyn Art Museum wants you That means you who are under 25 The new director claims that all over the nation young people are turning to art And as they do the concept of the dusty traditional museum is giving way to the new image of art museums as yes he used the word places one group more interested in an than any other age group is teen said Richard Gregg direc tor are as serious about loving art as they are about hat ing he added Gregg noted that in most museums now including Joslyn slightly more than half of the visitors are under 25 And he added good museums everywhere are doing more to encourage this trend At Joslyn the first oriented program of the year will be Sept 21 when a local rock group the New Haven Rock will perform from 1 to 5 pm on the front steps The world of jazz and ampli fied music carries over naturally to modern art Gregg said So he noted museums today are putting more emphasis on art of our own generation 20th century way of look ing at Jazz Rock people are really moved by modern art part of their whole scene You listen to jazz or rock music and not carry this same kind of tonality to visual he said at that Gregg said as he pointed at an op art work on the wall you let it it will scream at you just like amplified music Joslyn is planning an exhibit of work by living California ar tists for sometime next year Gregg said But why are young people interested in art today? And when did this interest flourish?
