Debus, of the New South Wales Department of Education, in Sydney, is spending two years at the University of Illinois as a Fulbright research scholar. Decatur's newer and larger school buildings are more advanced than Australian school buildings, Debus said. He also finds classrooms here less crowded.

The Australian public schools are built, staffed and maintained by a state board of education, he said. This organization gives less local control over the schools than he observed in Decatur and consequently less local participation in school matters. Debus toured Decatur's recreation centers and said Australia has no such winter recreation facilities although they do have outdoor ground programs during the summer holidays of January and February.
