John F. Kennedy, the youngest man ever elected to the Presidency, had majority support in I960 from the nation's youngest voters. Kennedy's strength among voters 21 to 29 years old, however, was exactly paralleled by Vice President Nixon's majority support from voters 50 years of age and older. The Poll's post-election analysis of the vote of the oldest and youngest persons in the electorate based on surveys before and after the election reveals the following: Although Kennedy received a clear majority of the vote of persons between the ages of 21 and 29. his support from that group did not run as high as it had appeared it might in the early stages of the campaign.

Some 54 per cent of these younger voters supported the Democratic ticket in November. In early September, surveys showed 61 per cent in this age group favoring the Kennedy-Johnson ticket. In the Roosevelt and Truman years, the Democrats had enjoyed the support of a sizable majority of the nation's youngest voters. In 1952, however, the GOP polled nearly half of the votes of persons then 21 to 29. In 1956, 7 per cent of persons 21 to 29 voted for Eisenhower.

This has been the trend of the presidential vote among younger voters since 1936: YOUNG VOTERS Age 21-29 Yrs. Dem.
