The MirrorAdvertiser Series Thursday September 4 1997 mmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mm mm jtnr welcomes Items ol THE editor weic interest entertainment rtphed but written and 0 theP On pages anything or te mom than Uut CemtttAeasht Weakly MSI 9U Arts ani Some excellent acting defeated by joyless script Julie stuck with unfeeling play Suzanna Andler by DAVID GURNEY Yvonne Arnaud Guildford THERE is something distinctly chilly at the heart of Suzanna Andler Maybe the setting The play is based in St Tropez during the winter a location which is all cold deserted beaches and big empty houses It is an unwelcoming miserable place which provides the ideal backdrop for the characters and the play both of which are suffering from a total lack of warmth Suzanna Andler played by Julie Christie is a confused woman Her marriage to a wealthy businessman is an unhappy one and she feels unloved and unfulfilled While in France she meets a younger man a journalist played by Aden Gillett who gives her some of the love she has been missing She seems happier but is still not sure she is doing the right thing Should she stay with him can it last who is she really meant to be Well frankly who cares? This is a dull play which appears to labour under the delusion the audience is prepared to endure a lot of very enigmatic and oh-so meaningful dialogue to find out what the fates have in store for Suzanna and her lover But it is just impossible to get involved It is quite remarkable how a play with no real plot and which is supposed to be dri ven solely by the emotional turmoil of the main character can leave you not the least bit interested in her feelings It is not that the acting is bad Julie Christie gives a fine measured performance and her talents do provide a couple of rare tender moments Aden Gillett is excellent making his character an old fashioned romantic while retaining the air of the cynical journalist Despite their efforts though Suzanna Andler gets nowhere slowly It is a lifeless joyless play which is more or less impenetrable and will almost certainly leave you cold Suzanna Adler continues at the Yvonne Arnaud until Saturday The show is directed by Madeleine Loftin production director on Michaei Lord Of The Dance and Scrooge: The Musical Andrew Edwards who was Hot Gossip's designer and is currently redesigning the costumes for Michael Crawford's turns to direct motion next Wednesday before considering making any important changes either personally or at work Now call your personal phone line tor an m-depth forecast MURIEL Massey author of Tenderfoot Travellers has a dream that she will one day see her musical performed in the West End Sadly the Archway's world premiere production suggests that this dream may well be a long way off In spite of the best efforts of director Margaret Morris and her cast the material is so insubstantial in content and gruellingly episodic in structure that my longing for something dramatic to happen was steadily replaced by a longing for the play to end Set in 1955 the story follows the Fenton family on their first holiday abroad in France The plot throws in some holiday romance a mysterious crime caper and some extraordinary plot developments that include a jarringly contrived pools win that ensures everything ends happily The main problem is that the play seems to avoid anything remotely dramatic stuck as it is in a nostalgic and naive style where adversity is faced with a stiff upper lip and the continual breezy cheeriness of it all becomes cloying Coupled with a frustratinglv large amount of scene changes (David economical set functions well in the face of them) that never allow the action room to breathe the result is disappointing The many songs skilfully arranged by Geoffrey Tinniswood are engaging and sung with gusto and the performances uniformly attempt to invigorate the material given to them Scott Robson as George has a cheeky self-awareness that belies his years and Camilla Moore as Susie performs her songs with style and confidence Ultimately though any amount of good acting can't conceal limp writing and even though this is a worthy experiment bv the Archway Tenderfoot Travellers needs to return to the drawing board before that West End dream comes true The Archway Theatre Club's next production will be Shakespeare's Twelfth Night to be performed from September 23 27 and September 30 October 4 starting at 745pm ANYONE who enjoys singing with a choral society might like to consider the East Surrey Choral Society which
