I mw 1 LOCAL ANGLE: Marty Allen only had a cameo in "Harrad Summer," but it was such a bright spot it has already led to new offers. He'll have his biggest movie role yet In an upcoming film called "Weekend of Terror," written by Jo Heims, who wrote both "Play Misty for Me" and "Breezy" for Clint Eastwood's company. The film will be produced and directed by independent film-maker Peter S.

Traynor. It's a suspense film, but Marty does a comedy sequence as a delivery-man who arrives at a house where Son-dra Locke and Colleen Camp are terrorizing Al Lettieri while his wife is away. It's difficult to imagine Lettieri being terrorized by anyone after the vicious characters he's played in "The t-away," "Mr. Majestyk" and so many other recent films. ON THE TOWN: After eight years, Don Brockett and Norman Roth have parted company.

Roth is striking out on his own and his first venture will be a special show for the National Organization of Women at Seven Springs on Nov. 2. He'll feature the newly formed sing-i group of Char Brandstetter, Sue Sager and Carol Knox. Roth reports the parting was amicable, and he has already signed to do some free-lance work realize the first title was a disaster), and it will be tested with a new campaign. Personally, I'm most encouraged by this trend.

While many films don't deserve a reprieve, I've seen too many worthwhile movies ignored by the audience in recent years. Just recently, the Eskimo epic "The White Dawn" was given a cold shoulder by moviegoers at the Forum and Encore. Although it was not a great film, it was 10 times better than most of those outdoor films Ra Expeditions," "Chariots of the Gods," etc.) that play suburban theaters to inexplicably strong business. The same theaters played a film called "Lovin Molly" this year, which few saw. With all its faults, it was a frequently fascinating film, much more interesting than many big moneymakers.

Therefore. It's good to note that Columbia is going to give the film another try at a Los Angeles theater to see if audience response can be generated. One of the best films of recent years a a beautiful and offbeat Western called "Bad Company" with Jeff Bridges and Barry Brown. Although created by David Newman and Robert Benton, whose scripts include those for "Bonnie and Clyde" and "What's Up "Bad Company" died of loneliness. Critics see everything, which means they are forced to watch a lot of dismal films.

But. what hurts even more is seeing a good film that nobody else attends. These might-have-beens are the cause of both hope and heartache. It should be remembered that many of the greatest films ever made, like "Citizen Kane," "Greed" and "Intolerance." were not financial successes the first time around. LOST FILMS: "Billy Jack" and 'Walking Tall" really started something.

And I'm not just referring to the trend to vigilante movirs. Perhaps, the best legacy of these two delayed-action hits is that they have sent distribution companies looking at the contents of their vaults to see what gold is left unmined. As everybody knows by now, "Billy Jack" and "Walking Tall" were flops when they first were released. Through stubborn and brilliantly successful promotion campaigns, however, they were given a second and even third-lease on life. The films wound up among the highest grossing of recent years.

That's why the current effort is being made totransform the flop "The Day of the Dolphin" into a hit in suburban theaters. And that's also why other films are being examined to see if thry have potential for popularity that audiences overlooked the first time around. Former Fittsburgher Arthur Manson Is one of the men most responsible for the imposing stature of "Walking Tall." which had just been lying there doing nothing. Today he's vice president of Bing Crosby Productions, a company that no longer involves Crosby himself. In his new capacity, Manson will try to work similar magic on a flop film called "From the Mixed-L'p Files of Mrs.

Basil E. Frankweiler." A G-rated comedy starring I 1 Bergman, it played Radio City Music Hall for a brief time to dull businss, and then disappeared from sight. Pittsburgh never saw it. BCP has now taken it over and Man-son says, "We're impressed with the film, and feel it deserves a second chance." The title has been changed to "The Hideaway" (it didn't take a genius to Cclcbraling "Up with the youthful musical show with 120 performers and 16 original songs, returns to Heinz Hall Wednesday at 8 p. m.

And she surely could.

When I looked up her age, which I'm not going to tell you unless you really want to know, I was greatly impressed. Once upon a time no lady used a certain word, but now titian haired Rhonda, who wears a size 10 or 12 and fills out those turtlenecks really nice, spoke right out and said "Rape." Actually she said "Rapes." Pushing her best bosom forward, she said. "Rapes are in the news." The episode of NBC's "Police Woman" which she plays with Angie Dickinson is called "An Anatomy of Two Rapes." "This woman claims a man who delivered chairs for her daughter's wedding comes back and rapes her. I put on 10 pounds making myself believable as a woman of that age son eating candy bars. My said, 'Mother, I forgot it was you.

"Your son?" I asked "Kent Lane. He went into real estate. He just did a TV role" "Who's his father?" Laughing, she said, "I'll try to remember. Tom Lane. A very fine man.

He's a builder." Due to a personal situation, the four times-married Rhonda quit acting for six years. Similarly, Maximilian Schell superbly carries off a small role as a former concentration caaap command-nant known as the Butcher. Incidentally, both he and Voight are excellently made up to appear 20 years older at different points in the story. One of those shocking reminders of the swift passage 'of time is the presence Schell's sister Maria in a brief role as Voight's mother.

It seems like only a flicker of time since she was the beautiful young Grushenka in Richard Brooks' underrated "The Brothers Karamazov," but it was really 16 years ago. The only weak performance in the film is that of Mary Tamm as the expressionless heroine. THE STORY concerns a free-lance journalist who learns of the existence of a secret organization named Odessa that helps SS officers find new identities and keeps alive Nazi principles. There's not much action in the determined hero's exploits, although the location shooting in Heidelberg, Vienna, Bayreuth and Hamburg has its fascination. "The Odessa File" looks good, thanks to the excellent low-key color photography of Oswald Morris.

The musical score is by Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer of "Jesus Christ Superstar." Like "The Day of the Jackal." also adapted from a bestseller by Frederick Forsyth, it is a suspense thriller without much suspense. In "Jackal" we knew that DeGaulle wasn't really going to be assassinated, and in "Odessa" we know that Israel isn't really going to be wiped out by Nasser with the help of former Nazi SS officers. The interest in the films, therefore, must lie in how the evil scheme is thwarted rather than in IF it will be thwarted.

In this respect, "Jackal" was better because it had a better director, Fred Zin-nemann. "The Odessa File," the new movie at the Squirrel Hill, is the product of Ronald Neame, whose films range from the forgettable to the fairly good of with occasional box-office successes like "The Poseidon Adventure" to kep him going. He's a 1 1 1 Richard Fleischer, in that he works a lot and has never had a really outstanding film. "THE ODESSA File" is, for him, above average, thanks as much to the actors as to the director. Jon Voight renews i claim to a front position in the ranks of today's best film actors.
