MrKmley. 1200 Stanvd Life fa. vf 'aaawasaMawwaaaiatag 'm I time since Dick Van Dyke Fairy. In the end this lovely lady transforms the nutcrack er into his original princely state. This inlerestiug variation served nicely not only to present a story easy for viewers to follow, but also to allow for three major roles.

These were handled by New York Ci(y Ballet stars Melissa Hayden, as the Sugar Fairy; Edward Villella, in the title role, and Fatricia Mi Bride as the grown up child, Clara. While I am admittedly no authority at all on ballet, it did seem to me that the dancing of the stars, especially the breathtaking leaps by Villella, was a cut above the overall choreography by Kurt Jacob. Yet, this may be lint picking, for under Liesendahl's outstanding direction the production as a whole was simply stunning. The music, though necessarily somewhat abridged, was pleasantly if not always stirringly, reproduced by the Budapest rhilharmonic, under Franz Allers. There was also splendid musical support by an unidentified Ihi.vs' choir.

I'm sure they will all be back next December. MORE BRIEFLY: For the first time this season, since it moved to the 1 p. m. time slot, Channel 11 will carry "Meet the Press" this Sunday. The guest to face the panel will be Constantinos Doxiadis, a leading international city planner and architect who is currently a visiting lecturer at Harvard, Yale and Princeton universities.

The debut of the "Gold-wyn Film Classics" feature movie package originally set to get underway on Channel 2 this Sunday on Harold V. Cohen's program with "Wuthering Heights," starring Merle Oberon, has been postponed until January 23. The delay In starting is due to the National Football League playoff this weekend, to be followed by other games until January 23. The NFL game on Sunday will be in color, it has just been announced. CBS IS planning to telecast "The New Adventures of Superman," a cartoon series, starting next fell.

It will be a Saturday morning feature. According to the network "Superman," which made its debut in 1938, has become the best-selling comic book of all time. It is now published in 76 countries in 13 languages. The same netAvork is planning to telecast "The National Health Test" In two parts, on January 18 and 25 from 10 to 11 p. m.

The programs will be based on answers to questions most frequently asked physicians by their patients, according to CBS. All those wild presents listed in the song "The 12 Days of Christmas" decorate the front of Harry Belafonte's Christmas card, which, interesting enough, the singer has taken the much appreciated trouble to sign personally which is not the general rule with star cards, which can be very impersonal Indeed. itt FINALLY, BRIGITTE Bar- dot's scheduled appearance on Ed Sullivan's show this Sun-1 day has been postponed until January 2. In the most recent Nielsen a t-ings the show is in the charmed Top 10 circle, so this is, to my ow ledge, the first time Win Fanning a television performer has called a halt at the peak of his popularity. Van Dyke simply wants to do other things, and so do other members of the comedy series cast. However, the star Is planning to remain under contract lo CBS for a Ions: pe-riod cf time the exact length rn terms are under negotiation and will most likely be turning: up on the small screen at least once a year in some kind of special. It is also understood that he will be free to make various guest appearances on other networks. Although I never watch any comedy or drama series week in and week out, I must confess to having looked in on the Van Dyke family more frequently than I have tuned to most other half-hour situation comedies.

I'm sure I'll miss the show, as obviously so many others will. BUT THERE is comfort in the thought that Van Dyke will doubtless be turning up with more regularity on the big screen, where his talents will have a wider field over which to range. Then, too, the programs already filmed are certain to remain on the syndication circuit for some years to come. In case you are Inlercsfed In the rating: company Van Dyke was keeping on that latest report for the two-week period ending December 5 thre were four hour-long specials ranged up along side him. These were "Ice Capades," "Salute to Stan Laurel," "Julie Andrews Show" and "The World of James Bond." "Bonanza" and "Walt Disney" tied for first.

Red Skel-ton, "Gomer Pyle" and "Branded" also shared the list with Dick. YOU HAD to look hard to 1 find the bits and pieces of the original story, but Tuesday evening's "Nutcracker Ballet" on Channel 2 was completely in tune with the holiday spirit. The traditional tale and music was skillfully adapted to the demands of a 54-minute teie-production and the commercials were thoughtfully spaced. I suppose a narrator was necessary and as long as this is true Eddie Albert did very well with the material provided. It might have been better, however, if Ernest Chambers' script had been Just a trifle less shigary.

The film, in color, was made In the Bavarian Studios, just outside of Munich, Germany, and it was evident almost from the beginning that the use of these large motion picture sound stages must have been a joy to director Heinz Liesendahl and the set designers. THE STORY, as designed for television, was presented as a little girl's dream about a nutcracker in the shape of a man she was given for Christmas, which proves to be an enchanted prince.
