Pitts suffered a torn achillps tendon against the Baltimore loits Nov. 5. NFL Publicity director Don Weiss said that placing Pitts on the reserve list, instead of the more familiar 30-day injured MORE FEDERAL PROJECT LAND OPEN FOR HUNTING Springfield (Special) More federal project lands around the Carlyle Reservoir have been opened for upland game hunting, the Illinois Department of Conservation announced. Quail and rabbits may be hunted on all federal lands above the dam, except within 500 feet of construction areas and in access areas posted with no hunting signs.

Quail and rabbit seasons begin at noon Saturday. Quail season ends at sunset Dec. 31 and rabbit season ends at sunset, Jan. 31. Champaign (Special) Illinois' six home football games drew a record total at tendance of 337,629.

The previ ous best mark was 293,393 for six games in 1965. Total attendance for eight games at home and away is 478,948. With two games to go, at Nortnwestern and Iowa, the Illini must draw 70,383 to set a regular-season mark. Previous best was 549,330 in 1965. Larg est single season attendance was 618,523 in 1963, including the 1964 Rose Bowl.

We are going to wait and see how it works out." "I have no plans to have it installed," said Scherer. "Of course, that is not an adamant statement. I might change my mind." "I want to see how it all works out," Vigneri observed. "There are still a lot of questions to be answered. How about atmospheric conditions? Will dust and temperature interfere with the computer system?" "No." says Bill Harrison of the Brunswick office in St.

Louis. "If a house maintains a constant temperature and keeps everything as clean as possible there won't be any interference. "To be honest, I haven't seen the system in operation, yet, but it won't hurt bowling." Unit Now Being Field Tested The automatic scorer is in full operation at the Village Lanes in Chicago, a 16-lane house. This is Brunswick's field test. Unlike a laboratory or factory, it will get a full test such as beverages being spilled on it, irate bowlers kicking it and atmospheric conditions.

"That means that if someone claimed him, he's gone," Weiss said. "It's so risky that I can't ever remember a team trying it." Barring the waivers, Weiss said, Pitts is now off the Pack-rs' roster "until the end of the season." Donny Anderson started in place of Pitts last Sunday and scored four touchdowns as the Packers demolished the Cleveland Browns 55 7. PESKY TO MANAGE COLUMBUS TEAM Columbus, Ohio (AP) The Columbus Jets of the International League named former major league baseball standout Johnny Pesky as their new manager.

The 48-year-old Pesky started his playing career in the Boston Red Sox organization 27 years ago and was the American League's All-Star shortstop in 1964. Top City Scorer Boehm Leads Bulldogs pQOgB LTD ffif GMT re pay tSto tora 5 Ed Boehm, top scorer among Decatur prep basketball players last season with a 20-point average, heads a group of three St. Teresa holdover regulars.

Boehm is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound-er who earned Herald and Review city "player of the year" honors and was an all Corn Belt Conference selection. The other returnees are Nick Beauford, 6-5, and Mike Eimer, 5-8. Beauford averaged 8.6 points, Eimer 4.0 as the Bulldogs of Coach Bob Ernst posted a 5-7 conference record and 12- 15 over-all. AD NEW LEAD ST TERESA "We will be looking hard for an outcourt shooter," said Ernst. "A good outcourt shot would loosen things up in the middle for Boehm and also give Beauford more room under neath to operate." Eimer, who was not out for football, has been working out regularly and Ernst feels Mike's shooting has improved over last season.

"Chuck Metzger, Keith Boaz or Craig Huffman could give us that outshooting we need at the other guard spot," said Ernst. Dennis deBourbon (6-1) and Dave Smith (5-9) have varsity experience, but neither played enough to letter. Both figure strong in this season plans. Another boy who could give the Bulldogs a big lift is Larry Unser, 6-2 forward who came on strong in late games last season. "Larry was in a lot in our last four or five games and i 4s 1 ft Opinion The pencil is now obsolete In bowling.

Brunswick has introduced the automatic scorer. What about this latest innovation? Are the house owners and bowlers "sold" on it? "I think it will take the game away from the bowler," said Carl Scherer of Eldorado Bowl. "It's unlike the automatic pin spotter in that replacing a pin boy didn't affect the bowler. Scorer Will Help Bowling Joe Vigneri of The Bowl disagrees. "I think it will help bowling," Vigneri said.

"There is a high percentage of bowlers that don't know how to keep score. By having this system, open bowling would increase and it would speed up the league bowling. "I've had bowlers tell me: I'd bowl in open play if I knew how to keep score. But I have to call so-and-so and if he can't go, then I can't go because I don't know how to keep The automatic scorer has to increase the popularity of bowling open and league." "I think it would help in solving disputes in scoring and having score cards checked," said Jim Flesch, secretary of the Sunshiners League at Pla-Mor Lanes. "In other words, the score shown on the screen would be final.

Therefore, the bowler would have to accept that score unless he could prove it wrong and computers have been known to be wrong." Hawks, Owls Illegal Game Urbana (Special) A reminder to Illinois hunters that it is illegal to shoot hawks and owls comes from Dr. Glen C. Sanderson, Illinois Natural History Survey wildlife specialist and head of the survey's wildlife research section. In 1959 the Illinois General Assembly made it illegal to kill all species of owls and hawks. This legislation was passed because of the birds' beneficial feeding habits and their graceful beauty appreciated by many Illinois citizens.

Until 1959 only certain species i of hawks and owls were on the state's protected list. Also guarded by state as well as federal laws, are bald and golden eagles. With waterfowl hunting season under way and upland game season opening Saturday, Dr. Sanderson points out that pheasant, rabbit and waterfowl hunters often flush short-eared owls roosting in areas such as cornfields and marshes. These low flying owls make easy targets and many are illegally shot each year.

Another marsh and field resident that is slow flying and easy to hit is the marsh hawk. Rough-legged hawks are often found in Illinois cornfields. Miller Has Knee Injury Champaign (Special) Illinois football linebacker Terry Miller of Areola had fluid removed from a knee and is a doubtful starter against Northwestern Saturday.

Miller overcame a bruised knee, twisted ankle, dislocated thumb, broken finger and the flu to play in the 21-14 loss to Michigan 'last Saturday. "Jeff Trigger will work at defensive end and linebacker until we get further word on Miller," Ulini Coach Jim Valek said. YANKS REDUCE ROSTER New York (AP The New York Yankees reduced their baseball roster lo 37 by assigning pitcher Thad Til-lotson outright to Syracuse oi the International League. Syracuse is a Yankees affiliate. The General Winter Tire GIL RAKER The new scorer is easy for the bowler.

The team captain places a scoresheet in position on the scorer console and writes in the players' names. Aside from rolling the ball, all the bowler has to do is move the bowler identification lever to his name each time he bowls. The same holds true for open bowling. The automatic scorer is linked to the automatic pin-setter. The console in a fraction of a second records the pinfall after each ball, calculates and prints the score frame by frame on a score-sheet and projects it to an overhead screen.

It also figures handicap, fouls, error correction and late arriving bowlers. When will the scorer be available? "In 1968," Harrison said. "Of course, all houses are not suited for the console, but we will attempt to supply all those that order it. "The price is $3,000 a lane. Lease terms are for a 10-year period at 5 cents a line with an annual minimum.

"This is the price we have established. It isn't a set price." "If automatic scorers are installed," Vigneri said, "then the bowlers are going to have to pay more. Will the bowlers be willing to pay more just to have the advantage of not having to keep score" Paul Schaefer of Schaefer's Lanes sums up: "Until I see it in operation, ask questions and have them answered to my satisfaction, then I really have no opinion about it." els and the bulbs atop the levers light when a bowler's turn comes up. ning of the $27,950 Demoiselle Stakes Wednesday at Aqueduct Race Track. Ernst is also hopeful Beauford can pick up his scoring. "They two and three-timed Boehm a lot last season," added Ernst, "Nick could help solve that problem along with some baskets from out front." Graduation losses include regulars Toby Cannon and Mike Hannapel and first line reserve Mike Schrader. "One thing I know we'll do," said Ernst. "That's get the basketball to Boehm as much as possible.
