lr ift ft Can Be Nightmares rTHE HEAT is on the Corn huskers today The Huskers are supposed to drub South Dakota State by a sizeable score Anything less than a sub stantial margin will be con sidered a moral victory for the and a dis mal start for the Scarlet As it takes a series of breaks to turn a mismatch into a romp coaches whose teams open with under manned opposition usually get little sleep riday night This has been the routine since little Centre College whipped mighty Harvard years ago OR NEBRAS KA coaches a so called easy opener always brings up the ghost of Hawaii This was in 1955 when the Huskers opened with Ha waii a team they had trounced 50 to 0 in the Is lands the preceding year The Hawaii lads spilled Bill Scarlet club 6 to 0 and 23 thousand fans staggered home to cry in their beer and buttermilk Little did it matter the Is landers could use freshmen a fact that permitted the quick importation of Skippy Dyer a semipro The Huskers were sup posed to gallop Instead they fell flat on their faces and the alumni real and curb stone were howling mad Even a 28 to 20 defeat at Ohio State the following week failed to ease the anger This was a Buckeye club bolstered by Rose Bowl stars of the preceding year and Nebraska surprised by leading 20 to 14 in the third quarter This same team which lost to Hawaii shook a three year Kansas State jinx thumped Colorado and Kan sas and won at Missouri But nothing it could do would erase the memory of that first failure The 1955 club is the last Nebraska team to win at Missouri No Repeat?
