462-2943. SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)-An unemployed janitor said he stopped his car and shot two policemen with a rifle Monday because of a sudden impulse to strike against "the system." Asked by nfewsmen why he had done it, Junious L. 21, replied: "Aw, man. It was a fool's play. Just a fool's play." Poole was arrested several blocks from where he stopped his car and "without saying a word," wounded two officers, one critically.

"They hadn't done anything. It was the whole system," Poole told newsmen from his jail- cell. "I don't know why I decided to let them have it. It just jumped out." Police said Poole had received a number of traffic tickets recently, the last one hour before the shooting. They speculated he was after the officer who issued him the citation and when he couldn't find him, attacked the first policemen he saw.

Patrolman James C. Bailey 30, underwent emergency surgery and several transfusions from being shot in the abdomen. Officer Code W. Beverly was shot in the thigh. Bailey said from his hospital bed that he and Beverly had begun walking their beat in the Mission district when a white car "A Negro got with a rifle in his hands and, without saying a word, started shooting at us," Bailey said.

"Code got hit right and went down. He did not have a chance to return the fire. I got hit, but I Was able to squeeze off eight shots. I don't think I hit him, though." Dead men 'still Love SEATTLE (UPI) Members of a religious sect have decided' two members whose bodies were found in a commune chapel Sunday are not dead. "We'll just have to see about this," said Happiness Israel, spokesman for a communal group, of about 50 persons who call tfiemselves the "Love Family" and occupy seven houses in the city's Queen Anne district.

Two victims identified as William V. Eddy, 26, and Gregory L. 22, were found dead after reportedly taking part in a ritual involving' inhalation of solvent fumes. Fellow members identified Eddy as Reverence Israel and LeMaster as Solidity Israel. Love Israel, head minister of the Church of Armageddon, told officers the victims had taken, part in the "rite of breathing." The ceremony involves placing a substance, known within maintains the sect as "tellyouall" into a plastic bag and inhaling the fumes.

Happiness Israel referred to the substance as having "special atmospheric conditions." The medical examiner's office said it appeared more like paint thinner. "We'll just have to see about this," Happiness Israel said. "We had a meeting and it was decided that they are not dead." "Tellyouall," he said, "is a gift from God. He said if Eddy and LeMaster really are dead then they "disbelievers." The medical examiners office, agreed to comply with a request that autopsies not be performed until today. A safety seminar for all pilots in the Ukiah area will be held Thursday night in the, library of the Ppmolita junior 1 high school.

The purpose of the meeting, according to Joe Gilley, aircraft accident prevention, counselor for the area, will be a demonstration on "vertigo," a diz-i ziness effect pilots sometime' encounter when they fly into heavy clouds. Gilley said the practical demonstration will of a chair with the pilot strapped and then spun at a high speed, simulating the "vertigo" effect. After the pilot is spun he will attempt to right his direction. Gilley said the demonstration is as near an actual simulation as can be achieved. On hand to perform the demonstration will be Thoville G.

Smith, a Federal Aviation Agency accident prevention specialist, from the Oakland airport. Gilley said that accidents involving a pilot who is not instrument rated are caused primarily when the pilot flies into a cloud cover and loses his orientation. He said the chair training would be beneficial to these pilots as well as the better trained ones. Smith will also bring with him a safety film oriented at positive thinking for pilots; Gilley invites not only pilots in the area but-persons who are interested in becoming pilots. For further information, on the meeting he invites anyone interested to call him a.t 4625902.

Eel bill reintroduced SACRAMENTO (UPI) Peter Behr, R-Tiburon, has introduced a bill to declare "wild" the Klamath, Trinity, Smith and Eel rivers in extreme Northern California. The measure, a similar version of a bill which was killed on the Senate floor last year, was unveiled last week at a news conference, but not formally introduced. It was designated SB107 Monday, the same as last year's legislation. By JANE DENISON WASHINGTON (UPI) Senate subcommittee today began exploring the mysterious "crib death" disease that each year kills thousands of seemingly healthy babies as they sleep. Medical experts and parents who have suffered the shock of suddenly losing.an infant were summoned to testify at a series of hearings on the rights of children- Walter F.

Mondale, chairman of the subcommitte on children and youth said it was fitting to begin, with "the most fundamental right of the right of a child to live," 1 Later hearings will deal with such topics as discrimination against handicapped youngsters and unsafe children's furniture. First identified as a specific PUC lawyers recommend refund SAN FRANCISCO Attorneys for the State Public Utilities Commission recommended Monday that the board order a multi-million dollar refund for customers of the Pacific Telephone Company. The request, made by attorneys Richard S. Gravelle and Leonard L. Srf aider, wds based on a California Supreme Court decision in November which said a key part of the PUC's ruling granting a $143 million rate increase to Pacific Telephone was illegal.

disease in 1969, "crib death" or "cot death" is estimated to snuff out the lives of at least 10,000 infants in the United States each year. In the medical community, the malady is usually known as "sudden infant death syndrome" or simply SIDS. "By any name, it is an elusive disease which strikes not only the but his whole family," Mondale said in his opening statement. "Sometimes the victim's parents, and and sisters never, recover from the shock, guilt and self-incrimination that follow." In a typical SIDS case, Mondale said, a happy, healthy baby is fed and tucked into his crib for the to be found dead a few minutes or hours later. Autopsies fail to reveal a specific cause of death.

Mondale quoted a letter from a woman who lost her son to SIDS 24 years ago and later was divorced. "My ex-husband has told both my daughters that I killed the baby," she wrote. "I fed him at 3 a.m. and at 6 a.m. He was dying when I went in to check on him.

I have seen two psychiatrists but I still have terrible guilt feelings." How can any mother in a similar situation "ever hope to escape the gnawing feeling that she was in some way responsible for that death the tortured thoughts that if she had only checked one more time, that the death could have been prevented?" Mondale asked. DR. JOHN B.
