rf Sunday, February 18, 1945. DECATUR SUNDAY HERALD AND REVIEW NATIONAL t-EiisI numU fines i Dill I Deny Wnf For Release Of Terrier Los Angeles, Feb. 17 (AP) An unsuccessful effort to obtain possession of Woof, female Staffordshire bull terrier which killed the infant- daughter of its owner last Tuesday, was made in superior court today by Grady Terry, a retired navy man who applied for a writ of habeas corpus. Superior Judge Walter Gates Challenging Beauty said he would deny the writ on the ground that the process of ha- beous corpus applies only to humans. 111 Saw" Week Describing Terry as "a friend of all dogs," the application declared the animal "has had no trial nor any logical training." Apparently impelled by jealousy, it seized 21-months-old Marguerita Derdenger by the throat as she played in her home, and killed her before its grip could be broken.

The child's parents, army Sgt. MM for Senator Wants 'No Strings' As a Delegate Washington, Feb. 17 (AP) 5n. Arthur H. Vandenberg (R-Mich) plans to ask President Pnosevelt if any strings are attached before he accepts an invitation to become one of the eight American delegates to the San Francisco World Security Conference.

Although Vandenberg would not discuss the matter himself, friends said today he had made it plain he does not want to be bound in advance by any commitments beyond the broad principles laid down at the preliminary Dumbarton Oaks meeting. At the same time, the chairman of the Republican senatorial conference was reported to have aieed with colleagues on the minority steering committee that if he attends, he will go as an individual and not as an official G. O. P. representative.

The steering committee was unwilling, as one of its members put it. to give even Vandenberg "a power of attorney" for the group. The Michigan Senator reportedly recognized this view as sound. Several Senate Republicans do not approve Vandenberg's recent proposal for the conclusion of a treaty among- the major allies guaranteeing immediate military action against Germany and Japan if the Axis countries attempt to rearm after the war. The United States would share in this without further Congressional action under the Vandenberg proposal.

That has brought some Republican opposition on the grounds that it would be tantamount to "a perpetual declaration of war," would constitute a military alliance and would invade Congress' powers to declare war.
