Church in East Sixth Street aboard The loss of life is estimated to be 1000 The following is the latest estimate made by Detective Sergeant Kinsler and Police Inspector Brooks Their computation is as follows fs Number on board 1600 Dead bodies recovered 400 3 Injured in hospitals 300 Survivors accounted for 100 Missing 800 Fiftythree injured persons died on North Brother Island while the doctors attending to them just after they had been carried from the boat to the shore When the Slocum went down at 1225 oclock two hours and twentyfive minutes after the fire was first discovered it is estimated that there were nearly one hundred charred bodies on her decks Every fewminutes a body pops up from the wreck The corpses of seven adults and I one baby were towed from there to North Brother Island at 2 oclock Just after the Slocum sank where she had drifted from North Brother Island the water was black with bodies The tug Fidelity succeeded in picking up eightyeight 4 charred corpses before the swirling eddies in Hunts Cove off Rikers Island carried them out into the Sound None of these eightyeight bodies can ever be identified Heads and legs are burned off Not a shred of clothing is left on any one of them I The captain of the Fidelity says that he estimates that he left twenty bodiej without trying to take them int he boat because it would have been impossible to arrange them into any semblance of human remains WORST HARBOR HORROR In sudden paralyzing horror the tragedy has no parallel the history of marine disasters in this harbor Within half an hour a laughing carefree crowd bound for a days outing i the country was more than decimated by firj and water All the bodies in the Harlem Morgue on North Brother Island and at the station houses will be
