of his charges of crooked basketball games in Madison Square Garden The New York Journal today quoted Allen as saying he had made the charges of thrown games on hearsay: Reached by phone at the University the Journal quoted Allen as saying: Menze Iowa State' coach and Vadal Peterson Utah coach had told me of reading a story in a New York newspaper of a game or games being fixed I did not see the newspaper clipping PHOG ALLEN TALKS ABOUT GAMBLING BUT HAS NO PROO crookedness in basketball Allen also hints that the writers may be open to bribery or if not that would refuse to look upon bribery with horror Allen should have been ac quainted long ago with a few facts which we now will set forth In the first place we cannot think of a New York newspaper which especially in the past sea son did not editorialize in its sports pages on the very marked upswing of gambling at Garden basketball games Dan Parker of the New York Daily Mirror printed a blast aMinst the activities of the Broadway crowd at Garden court games and Bob Considine in an on the line column last year gave bas ketball connected gambling a shot in the puss in no uncertain terms We are not remarkedly naive when we say that a local sports writer who knew the detailed in side facts on gambling in basket ball (if facts there are) would ninety nine times out of a hundred hurry the facts right into print These are the kind of stories that sports Writers feed on and to hide crime in sports is from a purely material view not very sound busi ness for a man who likes to honest ly earn an increase in his paycheck If there has been any payoff by basketball gamblers in sports writ ing circles it has not been among the reporters I know all just a broke as ever If Allen is to prove what he has charged he must give names dates and figures If he is right he should be simultaneously commended for his courage and chided for not hav ing told the world sooner If he is wrong well the least you can say is that he would have done a dis service to his sport Allen however already has proved one thing: that the greasier elements in the Broad way crowd cannot touch anything without leaving a suspicion of dirt PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION OHIO night for its sixth straight decision Warren the surprise team of the 1944 seasoi hit a snag riday night and was held to a 13 13 by Campbell Memorial
