Nebraska Satur day evening The University officially an nounced that it would abide by its contract with the coach after having demanded his resignation last Tuesday The Board of Regents met with blunder Their hasty action in letting an ill guided player revolt cause them to demand Coach Bill Glassford's resignation last Tuesday was one of tlie worst mistakes In college athletic his tory They ignored the provisions of his iron clad contract which they themselves had drawn up three years ago and asked him flatly to resign That action blasted the in tegrity of the University was an awful personal attack on Mr Glassford and opened the door for disgruntled students and vicious outsiders to take control away from the school's highest officials Members of the two boards found out quickly that public opinion was overwhelmingly on lhe side of Glassford The is sue wasn't whether he was a good coach or not but wheth er the University was ready to give up its honor and be ruled by revolt days then whipped up their courage and made public announcement that they jiad blundered They pledged their "complete support" to Glassford in his position as head football coach That was welcome announce ment to the institution's many graduates and friends who feared that the prestige of the University was suffering a blow from which it might never recover Now Acting Chancellor John Selleck and members of the two boards should take one more to prove beyond any question that they want to give Glassford a pressure free opportunity to run the football program as he thinks bert They should without delay take action to give Glassford the additional position of ath letic director so that he may have full control of the depart ment and straighten out prob lems other than on the foot ball I could have gone to schools' where I could have received more ail main objective in com ing to this university was to get an education not to be a part of a 'dog eat ath letic setup is just the false impres sions that I have been under since I arrived that have both ered me Mr Glassford has things so tied up over at the Coliseum that no one knows what is really happening "The reason that any of us have never said anything before was because of the fear that we have of the coach think that my main com plaint against Coach Glass ford is his stand on the rela tionship between football and education always said that studies came first Yet last semester he told me to take a certain course off my schedule be cause it interfered with prac tire one night during each week in engineering you don't think hard to play football and continue in engineering just ask some one who did if you can find him Glassford told us that we take any classes after 2 next fall I told him it was almost impossible for me to do so he said that I could ar range my schedule so that those late classes would be taken in the morning said that any one who had to take a late class needed special permission from him I think it's getting pretty bad when the football coach makes out our schedules "My idea is that football should be played for fun and that the only time a student should devote do football is that which is left over after studies Some weeks during lhe season we had meetings three nights a week and they lasted until the late hours I was so tensed (sic) up and Tall Boys Baffle Blues 89 84
