By DAWN MORVILLE Herald Review Staff Writer The world's tallest man, whose lifesize statue was dedicated a month ago in his hometown of Alton, was in Decatur nine months before he died in 1940 at the age of 22. Robert Pershing Wadlow, known as the Gentle Giant of Alton and still the tallest man who ever lived, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, stopped in Decatur on Oct. 21, 1939, to eat supper with his family. He was on his way home from a personal appearance in Morris, southwest of Chicago. The 8-foot, 11-inch Wadlow, his father, sister and brother ate at a Lincoln Square restaurant, according to a Herald Review article.

The reporter who wrote about that visit in the city poked hmnor at the man's height. "They all stuck their knees under the table, that is. except Robert, who shoved his size 39 shoes out into the aisle and draped his five and a half feet of legs around a chair that squatted beneath him like a toy." the article said. THE 500-POUND Wadlow. who was 21 at the time, created quite a stir both inside and outside the restaurant.

Curious onlookers pressed their noses against the restaurant window and stared at the young giant. "Gee," somebody said. "Look at them paws." A friend of Wadlow's. Decatur resident Ralph McGhee. said Wadlow never complained about people's remarks.

"He wasn't a person to complain," said the 85-vear-old man of 1829 N. Gulick Ave. "You felt sorry for him, but you never said anything about it," he said. "People just looked at him in wonderment because it was a wonder that anyone could grow to be that tall." When Wadlow was born Feb. 22, 1918, he was a normal-size infant, weighing nine pounds.

Although he reached 30 pounds at the end of six months, his unusual growth was not noticed until he was a year old. He weighed 62 pounds at 18 months old and by age 8, he was 6-feet-2V2 and weighed 195 pounds. His abnormal height was attributed to an overactive pituitary gland. IN SPITE OF his size and the physical pain he suffered as a result, McGhee said he was a pleasant and calm person. Wadlow's personality could not be detected during his 1939 visit to Decatur.

According to the article, Wadlow did not say much at the restaurant. "He just sat there lifting his brother around like a cigaret," it said. He said special accommodations for Wadlow's size were always made in motels. "We'd push two beds together and he laid on there on an angle," he said. And when they went in a restaurant, "You'd eat your hamburger and he'd eat six." He also remembers ordering Cokes one day when the owner of a Decatur establishment put down regular-size glass bottles in front of-McGhee and another man gave Wadlow a gallon bottle of Coke. "He just picked up the Coke bottle and drank the whole damn bottle and never even cracked a smile," McGhee said. When Wadlow sat in a car, his knees went to the roof of the car and he had to sit at an angle, McGhee remembers.

did work briefly in circus and toured in the 1930s as a representative of International Shoe Co. That is when McGhee knew Wadlow. MCGHEE WAS A salesman for a local shoe store when he met Wadlow through a shoe company representative. One of the shoe manufacturers owned by International made Wad-low's shoes, which McGhee said were actually size 36, not size 39 as news items say. He said it cost the shoe company $500 just to make a pattern for the shoes, which McGhee estimated would have been between 17 and 19 inches long and 8 to 9 inches wide.

The enormous, shoes were a selling point for the shoe company and that is why Wadlow toured for them, he said. MCGHEE REMEMBERS being How Wadlow appeared to an outsider while sitting in a car also amused the Herald Review reporter who wrote about the 1939 visit. According to that account, Wadlow finished his ham and eggs at the restaurant and the family left in their seven-passenger sedan, "Bob looming up in the back seat like an extra engine." NINE MONTHS LATER, Wadlow died from an infection brought about by chafing from an ankle brace he wore to support his massive frame. An estimated 40,000 people filed past his casket, which was built especially for him. This year, residents of Alton, on the Mississippi River near St.
