PI City Receives Lake Decatur Bacteria Count Find Nelson Beach Rating Above Average; Value of Survey Doubted by Physician.

Talbert. city physician, had no explanation to offer for this discovery, which tends to disprove the popular belief that swimming in "the lake' carries the threat of serious contamination of the city's water supply.

Samples of the beach and lake water were sent to the state health department laboratories for analysis. The water taken from the municipal beach was shown to contain 1,400 bacteria per cubic centimeter (about 15 drops). A sample from the center of the lake channel, at the Nelson park bridge, had a bacteria count of 18,000 or more than nine times as great as that of the beach sample. "No bacteriological standards for water at bathing beaches have been prepared," the state report said. "No laboratory procedure has yet been developed by any federal, state or other laboratory for satisfactory differentation between harmful and non-harmful contemplation of such bathing and swimming waters. Non-Harmful Bacteria "Unless the water is being chlorinated, no opinion can be formulated as to the safetj of bathing beaches for swimming purposes on the basis of bacterial analysis.

Therefore, although analyses have some value as an index of the cleanliness of the water, they are of little value in giving a definite opinion as to the freedom of such waters from harmful pollution." In this connection. Dr. Talbert explained the analysis includes non-harmful bacteria and that there is no way of telling from the laboratory report whether infectious types are in the water in dangerous numbers. Supporting the presumption that the lake water is reasonably safe is the absence of any re- port of infections among lake swim- mers. The city physician said the bac-! teria count for the municipal beach is about the same as shown in pre-vious analyses, and added that it 1 compares favorably with other na- tural and semi-natural swimming places.

The test of water from the main channel of the lake was the first made by the city, so there was no basis of comparison with previous findings. The stage and setting for the entertainment were furnished by the Decatur Park district; the lighting by Commissioner Earl V. Smith. Following a brief explanation of the purpose of community entertainments by Lloyd Baird, there was presented a program which included dance numbers by Gloria Ann Joan Clark. Norma-dene Hirsch, Joan Patterson, Frances Jane Clark, Shirley Pritts, Percey Tolliver and Charles Brown: accordion solos by Robert Thompson, and a playlet by a Boy Scout troop led by Ellsworth Dansby, Jr. The program was closed with community singing to accordion accompaniment by Mr.

Thompson. 1 Grain Company Sued For Death of Youth Oscar Gabriel of near Macon fild suit for $10,000 against the Macon Grain company Thursday in ciroult court to recover damages for the fatal injury of James Gabriel, a son, in July 1933. The youth was driving a team of mules with a load of corn on the platform at the Macon elevator when the mules became frightened and ran. It is claimed the grain company was negligent in maintaining a platform of that type.
