Gloves both for the amateurs who compete in the City tournament Thursday and riday and for the fans who will witness the fun i The main idea back of Golden Gloves is not to build professional boxers But when a kid like oster makes such a rapid climb from the amateurs to near the top of the pro heap other kids are bound to get ideas More than one youngster who starts swinging at the Auditorium Thursday: night will be thinking about Vince and his Madison Square Gardea bouts and dreaming of some day doing the same thing himself At the same time many of the onlookers will be comparing the' current crop of Golden Glovers to oster And trying to qualify' as expert spotters of talent in the raw by picking out certain young punchers as future osters IVTOST fans realize that oster himself was in this City Golden Gloves scramble only three years ago He won the crown that year of 1946 and advanced to the semifinals of the Chicago Tourna ment of Champions But what most Omahans have forgotten is that a year before 'that in the 1945 Golden meet here oster was just an obscure entrant and a loser in the City go back to the records for a moment In 1945 oster was a lightweight entrant from the YMCA He had done some' boxing previously while a student at Haskell Institute but still was pretty much of a green beginner In his first bout at the 'Audi torium he scored a first round TKO over one Joseph Rogue of Lin 1 coin i But in his next start he was decisioned by Pvt James Simms ot the Harvard Air ield Simms was decisioned by Gene Brown the South High southpaw in the finals Incidentally
