1 0 -THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3,1987 THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL' Storms postpone water estimate state SACRAMENTO (AP) State officials say the storms in Northern California are delaying the bad news of cutbacks to State Water Project customers, but may be softening the blow of a dry 1988. The state Department of Water Resources' initial estimate of water availability for next year had been due Tuesday. And it would have told contractors to expect reduced supplies. But after two days of storms dropped 45 percent of the monthly total for a "normal" December, the officials decided to delay that report until Dec. 15.

"There will probably still be some reductions imposed," Dave Hitzeman, acting chief of the water project's analysis office, said Wednesday in a telephone interview. "We won't know until sometime around the middle of next week what the amount of the reductions will be." The estimates the state gives every year to 30 regional water agencies throughout California are intentionally conservative, Hitzeman said. Updated monthly, they take into account only existing snowpacks and resevoir levels, and assume that the rest of the year will be as dry as the 1977 drought. Hitzeman said the outlook is better than in 1977, but dry soil is soaking up much of this week's rains and little water is reaching the Sierra Nevada reservoirs. "Like we say one storm doesn't make a whole winter.

If this storm went through and it turned dry thereafter, we'd still be in trouble," he said. Maurice Roos, the state's chief hydrologist, said rainfall in the Northern Sierra between Tahoe and Shasta Lake was Jess than half normal through November. This week's storms could bring year-end rainfall totals "back to normal pretty fast," Roos said. 'Orky' nearly killed another trainer 10 years ago SAN DIEGO (AP) A killer whale that crushed a trainer, seriously injuring him during a Sea World performance, nearly killed another trainer 10 years ago in an incident at a different marine park, its former trainers say. Orky, the male killer whale that landed on top of a trainer who was riding another whale during a Nov.

21 Sea World show, had not been in the water with humans since it pinned the Marincland trainer at the bottom of its pool in former Marineland employees said. "We didn't regularly do water work with him (after that) because we didn't feel it was safe," said Kim Desmond, chief trainer at Marineland from 1974 until the Rancho Palos Verdes aquatic park was bought and closed by Sea World last year. Sea World trainers were warned about the dangerousness of Orky by their Marineland counterparts, who were not included in the transition to San Diego, said Bud Krames, a former Marineland trainer and former supervisor of Sea World's animal behavior department. "After the Marineland trainers protested, we were allowed one day to visit (Sea World trainers) and give all we knew about Orky," Krames said. "I don't think they listened at all.

Orky was not used to having trainers in the pool with him." The six-ton whale, which was taken to Marineland shortly after its capture in British Columbia 19 years ago, was having trouble adjusting to Sea World's new $13 million Shamu Stadium, Krames said. Orky also was adjusting to new hand signals from new trainers and being the only male in a pool with four females before the most recent accident, Krames said. Sea World trainer John Sillick, 26, remains in fair condition at UC- San Diego Medical Center with fractured ribs, pelvis and femur suffered in the accident that led to the firing of the park's president and three other top employees. Fired president Jan E. Schultz will be replaced by Robert Gault, current president of the Orlando Sea World and former president of Sea World's park in Aurora, Ohio, the San Diego Union reported Thursday.

Landslide blocks some lanes of 1-5 near Redding LAKEHEAD (AP) A rain, soaked hillside weakened by construction work collapsed Tuesday afternoon, forcing closure of the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 and causing delays for motorists. A pilot car guided traffic through the slide area, rerouting southbound drivers across a northbound lane after the hillside slid at 12:06 p.m., said Steve Peach, with the California Highway Patrol in Redding. Motorists were delayed about 15 minutes, he said. The slide occurred near the town of Lakehead, 270 miles north of San Francisco and about 20 miles north of Redding. The collapse was the second time on Tuesday that the section of hill on the west side of the interstate slid into the southbound lane, Peach said.

A slide at 8 a.m. closed the lane for about five minutes. The anniversary memorial began Wednesday night with a march to the plant. Demonstrators shouted "Down with Union Carbide!" and "Multinationals quit India!" after a cut was made through a mountainside in an attempt to straighten out a sharp curve on 1-5, Peach said.

The same section experienced at least one other slide before Tuesday, said Bev Dunn, spokeswoman for the California Transportation Department, who blamed the collapse on rainfall saturating the ground. "We've been watching that hill, and emergency equipment has been standing by all day in case," Dunn said. Spuds T-shirt ban rescinded SAN LORENZO (AP) San Lorenzo High School officials rescinded a controversial ban on T-shirts and other clothing articles that advertised beer because of fears of costly legal battles. "The law is open-ended and gray instead of black and white," said Principal Joanne Knowles, speaking Tuesday night to school trustees. Dear Ann Landers: I did a dumb thing and need to know how to get out of it. I met "John" last spring and we hit it off real well. He is a junior in high school and I'm a sophomore. His birthday is coming up in January and I asked him what he wanted. He said, "You." I foolishly said, "It's a deal." John keeps reminding me of my promise.

He has made elaborate plans so we can drive to the outskirts of town and check in at a motel all day Sunday. I like him more than any guy I've ever known but I'm not ready for what he has in mind. In fact I am scared to death. Please, Ann Landers, tell me how I can get out of this without losing the guy. Scared in Middletown Dear Scared: Pick a quiet time and tell John you've given a great deal of thought to your impetuous commitment and have decided that it would be the wrong thing for both of you.

Don't be surprised if he's relieved. Readers who want to write to Ann Landers should send their letters to: Ann Landers, Ukiah Daily Journal, P.O. Box 749, Ukiah, CA 95482.
