Decatur, Illinois, Monday, April 30, 1962. . THE DECATUR REVIEW PAGE THREE Ice Cream Plant New NightSpot Fifty-three years ago Pete Bala mos and James Kareotes moved to Decatur and opened the Ameri can Ice Cream Co. at the corner of Water Street and Grand Ave nue. Mr. Balamos died in 1948 but .his partner, Kareotes, has just re cently retired from active busi ness. uino Balamos. son ot Fete, is carrying on the tradition of the family in the same location but he has changed the former ice cream plant to a modern tavern, the Polynesian oom, decorated in a motif that is strictly Hawaiian. The ceiling of the main room of the tavern is covered with fishing nets. The walls, are decorated with wooden hand-carved face masks. Two authentic spears are also at tached to the wall but Dino said the points were filed off the spears and they are firmly secured to the wall so they can't be taken down by an over-enthusiastic customer. Just inside the side entrance to the building designers have cre ated a Polynesian beach complete with a waterfall, sand, starfish and tropical flowers. A similar waterfall setting has been built in the mam lounge. Dino said the starfish are the Pacific variety just to add to the authenticity of the scene. In one of the front windows there is a beach scene that includes the shell of a man-eating clam. ' Why would Dino, whose family traditions go back to the heart of Greece, decide on a Polynesian motif for his tavern? "Credit Uncle Sam," he said. This is Dino's explanation for his interest in such things. The desire for such a place of business began when he was in the Marine Corps. Tropical drinks are mixed at the thatch-covered bar. But if you have an American taste you can order the old stand-bys. Martini, Old Fashioned or a bottle of cold beer. What does James Kareotes think of the change? "It's nice. Dino has done a lot! of research on the things he has here but it ure is different from the days when Pete and I made ice cream to sell to the people of Decatur," he said. Pete and Jim moved to Decatur from Danville as young men and went in business as operators of one of the first ice cream manufacturing plants in Decatur. In the years that have passed they operated an ice cream parlor and later the American Tavern was started. Now it is the Polynesian Room. : s V ;"aJ?,.
