Conditions in the copper industry are slowly but steadily improving, ac cording to Cleveland Dodge, son of Cleveland H- Dodge, noted capital ist, head of Near East Relief and for years a leading official of the Phelps Dodge Corporation. Young Dodge, wly i3 spending a few days in the dis trict, was one of the speakers at the Luncheon Club meeting yesterday noon. "It is difficult to talk on the coppef situation." he said, "because some of the best guessors in the country have turned out to be badly mistaken in the predictions they have made. "The United States is rapidly finding that it cannot get along without the help of the rest of the world. This holds particularly true in regard to copper.

Germany needs copper more than any other nation. Before the war Germany led in the manufacture: of electrical instruments and supplies. But Germany today has no money. Some of the other European countries are buying copper, but not on the ex tensive scale that we would like to see "It will be impossible to have a real good copper market until conditions in Europe are more settled. We feel that conditions are getting better all the time.

The settling of the Turkish war scare should help improve condi- i tions to some extent. "The Copper and Brass Research Association is doing some remarkable work in its laboratories; investigation and experiment work that will unques tionably result in creating many new uses for copper. So far, that work has not yet reached the stage where much publicity can be given it- But the association is going ahead with an extensive advertising campaign, and that campaign is getting results. Another thing favorable to copper and brass is that many small manufacturers, formerly engaged in making war souvenirs, are now switching to the manufacture of many small articles o' copper and brass. "We are all looking forward to an improvement in the copper market.

But it will probably be an improvement, first, in demand, and we dare not hope for any increase in the price of copper. That will eventually come when the demand is so great that all producing companies are running at maximum production.
