Okun, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, was urged today to oppose expected price 1 hikes on 1969 automobiles. The request came from Rep. Benjamin S. Rosenthal, D- N. who in a letter to Okun also asked that the council make public its review of past auto price increases, gathered during private meetings with industry representatives.

"In light of the high level of auto industry profits twice that of the American industry average- cannot conceive of a justification for a price increase in 1969 models," Rosenthal said. He said the council also should make public "relevant information considered during meetings with auto industry representatives over the past four years-such as a review of past auto price increases." The council, Rosenthal said, "should act to forestall higher prices this year by opposing new hikes now rather than voicing disapproval after increases are announced" for 1969 automobiles.
