Filmed by David Lean His efforts to escape incarceration in a strange white infinity occupy the balance of the film, and arouse the only action in what is essentially a downbeat film.

Robert Duvall Is the hero, and Donald Pleasence plays another of his eerily suggestive roles. Maggie McOmie Is the poignant, hairless heroine. "THX 1138" is appropriately imaginative, but its opening is jarring and confusing. Once it focuses in on its main characters, it begins to come alive. L'THX 1138," an impossible title to remember for those of us who are still relatively un-cotnpnterized, is the name of the hero of the film. The project originated as a student film by George Lucas at UCLA. It was so well regarded that Warner Brothers enabled him to re-do his short film as a feature-length movie, certainly a revolutionary idea for a major studio. Lucas portraysa future world of disturbing coldness and sterility, where almost everything is blinding white. Yet, the young writer-director has not just indulged himself in Jules Verne fancies.

Instead, he has i a i a world in which many elements of current society are carried to suffocating extremes. For example, all the inhabitants are hairless, which should satisfy those present-day peo- pie. whose seem to fair hair. Drugs are mandatory, forcing people into robot-like obedience. Conformity is total, with everyone dressed in white hospital-like garb.

Surveillance i complete, with television monitors even in medicine cabinets to insure the proper taking of drugs. The police are black-clad, chrome-headed machines. Television consists of figures floating in space, and viewers may choose between talk shows, hokey comedians and naked dancers, which some members of the audience may find an improvement of sorts. of course, sex is outlawed. Birth Is something stoirctly for laboratories.

This Is what gets the hero in trouble. ftte quits taking his pills, end finds himself developing tmfam'liar feelings for his computer-assigned roommate, a 'femalf? named LUH 3417. Wh she becomes pregnant, they are arrested, and the hero is charged with sexual perversion.
