-PITTSBURGH TOST-GAZETTEi WEDESDAY, JUNE 5, 1968- jfatmd McCormack Leads Yanks in British Golf By CHARLEY FEENEY, Sport Writer -28- The Record-Maker LOS ANGELES, June 4 A question was put to Walt Alston last night which some basebull managers might have termed "loaded." The Dodger manager didn't flinch when he was asked the question which was about his strategy In last Friday night's game against the Giants. A writer asked Alston if he Would have replaced Don around him. McCovey hits Drysdale pretty good. When Jim Hart singled, I began to Drysdalewhen the Giants 1 threatened In the ninth Inning if the big Dodger ace bad not been going after a shutout record. TDrysdale, leading, 3-0, was within an fKJr 3 If' mm I mum Walt Alston inning of his lllia 2, Ti) Willi mSF worry.

Then when Drysdal walked that fellow (Dave) Marshall, I could see Don was losing his stuff. It's not like Drysdale to walk two men in one inning." The Dodgers' 3-0 lead was in jeopardy and Drysdale went to 2-2 on Dick Dietz when it appeared that his shutout string was over on the next pitch. It hit Dietz on the left elbow. The huge crowd at Chavez Ravine groaned, and suddenly there was hope, and a bunch of raging Giants surrounding plate umpire Harry Wendelstedt. The umpire ruled that Dietz did not make an attempt to avoid being hit by the pitch.

He ruled the pitch ball three which brought it to a full count. When the Giants were finally calmed down, play was resumed. Dietz popped up, the next hitter forced a runner at the plate, and the next flied out. "It was one of the most exciting moments I ever broadcast," Dodger announcer Vlnce Scully said. Amateur Test Into 3rd Round Former Champs Eliminated In Event at Troon TROON, Scotland, June 4 (AP) Mark McCormack, the manager of golf's big three of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, led a band of five Americans into the third round of the British Amateur Golf Championship today.

Seven more Yanks, Including 1937 champion Bob Sweeny, will play their second-round matches tomorrow over Troon's par 36-37 73 course. But 15 other invaders, Including former champion Dick Chapman and Don Given, believed to be the first Negro ever to compete in the 83-year-old tourney, were eliminated today. The other four in the third round are Warren Vanderbush of Closter, N.J.; Ed Meister, of Cleveland; Bob Falkenburg of Los Angeles and Brazil, and John Matheny of Fort Worth, Tex. McCormack, of Cleveland, beat Ed Easson, of England, 1 up; Vanderbush, an airman first class, topped Jim Lower, of England, 2 and Falkenburg, the former Wimbledon tennis champion, beat A. N.

G. Brown, of Scotland on the 19th hole; Meister, a former Walker Cup player from Cleveland, beat Ted Da vies of Wales, 1 up, and Matheny eliminated Jim Neilan of Scotland, 2 and 1. Among those who will play second-round matches tomorrow are Bob Sweeny, the 1937 champion from Palm Beach, Frank Strafact of Miami, A. Peterson Jr. tif Arizona; Bob Seylor of Westbrook, Ohio; Harry MacCallum of Fort Lauderdale, and Woodward Millcn and Pete Jacohi of New York.

Pnt.an7pH PhotOS fifth straight shutout when he appeared to have lost his stuff. He walked two hitters and gave up a single which loaded the bases. "I think," Alston said calm-ly, "I would have replaced Don if he had not been going after the record. If It was September and we were in a pennant race I think I would have replaced him even with the record at stake." It was a straight-forward answer. It was the kind people have come to expect from Walter Alston, who quietly rules the Dodgers with a strong hand.

It was that way when the Dodgers were cluttered with big stars and it is still that way although Drysdale is the only big name remaining on a club that began winning pennants in the forties in Brooklyn and continued winning their share in Los Angeles until Sandy Koufax quit baseball after the 1966 pennant year. The Dodgers provided their fans with many thrills since coming to Los Angeles 10 years ago. Drysdale's famous ninth last Friday against the Giants rates high among them. Alston replayed the ninth again for a group of writers last night "When Don walked Willie McCovey to start the ninth, I figured he was trying to pitch England's young golf hawk, Tony Jacklin (right), at Sewichley Australian Bruce Devlin, here for 2nd straight Open qualifier, gives Heights for Open test, checks scorecard with amateur Ludwig Schenk. autograph and smile to Jim Shoener, 11, of RD 3, Setvickley.

Dodger Veep Buzzie Bavasl points out that the Giants still had the bases-loaded and none out after Wendelstedt's call. He thinks the credit should go to Drysdale. Fresco Thompson, another Dodger veep, challenges Franks' "gutless" charge at Wendelstedt. "It took guts to make a call like that," Thompson said.

"If anybody was gutless, it certainly wasn't Wendelstedt. He could have taken the easy way out, but didn't." dous 82 In which "everything went wrong." Pacific Coast Amateur champion Dr. Ed Updegraff of Tucson, could be called a more minor casualty. He had 76-82-158. Both local co-medalists, Frank Kiraly and Norman Rack, failed to make the grade as did West Penn Open champion Andy Borkovich.

But eight of the 14 qualifiers are district players and that makes for a fine showing. A crowd of some 3,000 turned out in the fine weather. Sewickley Heights Golf Club yesterday. His feat won him $300 and a place in the Tournament proper at Oak Hill Country Club, Rochester, N. June 13-16.

Don Allen, an Insurance salesman from Rochester, N. Y. and a member of the last Capps, the Tri-State PGA champion from Beckley, W. Walker Cup team, was next in line with 75-73-148.

Cole, a member of the famous Mark McCormack "Stable" which includes Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, Sanders, got plenty of power out of a slender 140-pound body on this sizeable layout. He won $200.
