By LEE McIXERXEY THAT'S A nicely. entertaining show the Holiday House has this week (and, so far as Its head man goes, most of next It's a show to take the whole family to gee, for the head man is Senor Wences, in a typical performance which means a good performance with a lot of delightful whimsey. Don't ask me how It is that you can see and hear little Johnny Martin over and over without tiring in the least of his wilful persistence. There he is, being taught music by his master, the Senor; and the conversation goes like this: (Senor): Very nice music. Yes? (Johnny) Yes.

(Senor) Yes. (Johnny) Yes. Very nice. (Senor) Very nice and very difficult. (Johnny) Very easy.

(Senor) Very difficult. (Johnny) Very easy. (Senor, taking up stick) Very diff-eecult. (Johnny) Very difficult. For you.

For me, very easy. The crowd loves it, every repetitive word, and has a real liking for the little boy who, for a face, has Senor Wences' wig-bedecked hand, and for a body, a stiff small-size dummy's. Johnny seems real; so does that crazy Pedro in the box, who just has to say. "Saw-right!" to get his laughs; and as for Cecilia the Chicken-well, there's another strange personality for you. They all have Senor Wences' accented voice in different ranges he even brings in the muted voices of a man and woman over a telephone; and he's able to make Pedro's voice seem muffled, within the box, and de-muffle it as he opens the lid.

That's being some ventriloquist; but what really makes the Wences act so beguiling, as if you need to be told, is the charm and appeal of his assorted little creatures. IFYOUUKEW the current postal rates Man, woman and child, in notes both neat and scrawled, Constant Reader wants At Random to know that they stand four square behind its Seal of Approval. Let this then be a collective thanks to them all for their gracious chorus of amens. At the risk of going1 overboard, still again, for "Mary Poppins," something borrowed simply cannot be resisted, a column that looks at Mr. Disney's happiness-on-the-wing so uniquely that it should not be limited to only the subscription areas the Kansas City Star covers.

The piece by Bill Vaughan ran on the editorial page of that newspaper a week ago and appears below in its entirety by request (mine) under a silent sub-head which reads Add -Things-I-WLsh-I Had-Written: I wasted a recent evening at the movies by going to see a picture called "Mary Poppins." If you can imagine it, this was a picture where nobody took their clothes off or expressed their affection by biting one another. The camera work was amateurish because you could tell what was going on, instead of there being the customary threshing about in the dark with occasional bits of flesh flashing Ing at something which has nothing whatever to do with the atomic bomb or Vietnam. Worse, my 13-year-old daughter was laughing. And it was healthy laughter. There was nothing sick about it.

I had the dreadful feeling that, as we laughed, we weren't releasing any of our pent-up animosity toward the world around us. I'm going to call the psychiatrist to see if he has a family rate. I try to excuse myself on the grounds that I had dined well, the day at the office hadn't been too bad and I was, in a word, feeling good. Some day when I'm feeling terrible I'm going to give myself a second chance and go back to see "Mary Poppins" when I can really hate it, and make up for the evening I wasted. End reprint.

But unending remain the green-wlth-envy shadows which hang over this typewriter for not having thought up such an off beat salaam to "Mary Poppins" first. A certain amount of sex was involved, but only in the primitive sense that you could tell which were the girls and which were the boys. As we all recognize, this Is no wav to come to grips with the tragic realities which underlie life today. I regret to report there were no Japanese peasants carrying buckets of sand up strep mountainsides to illustrate the futility of man's predicament here on earth. Furthermore there were a brother and sister in the show who did nothing at all to shed a blinding light upon our knowledge of sibling rivalry. They didn't even hint at forbidden games ripped from the hitherto unpublished writings of Krafft-Ebbing.

There were songs In this movie and the people who sang them could sing. This should have been warning enough, but it got worse. The people who danced really danced Instead of rushing around over the set. Of course, when I saw how things were going, I should have walked out, but I was committed to the baby-sitter for the minimum. I hoped things would get worse, meaning better.

They didn't. This "Mary Poppins" turned out to have a plot. If this weren't unthinkable enough it had whimsey, the one thing we addicts of the pure cinema can't abide. It makes us" fwow up" we say whimsically, tak-ing another sip of a good, dry sherry. You know what else this movie had In it? It had a cute little boy and girl in it.

Yes "cute." That's the only word for It. I had an Impressionable 13-year-old child with me. All her life she has been rigorously protected from cuteness. We tear "Peanuts" out of the paper before we let her read It. mm tv i Jt a v.
